how does junior varsity work in college football

I feel really stupid, so I was not aware that college football had a junior varsity squad. So who the hell makes up the jv team and who do they play. Does the jv squad play the same schedule as the varsity team like in high school or is it completely different. Ive never heard anyone refer to jv and varsity in college football
