BERLIN (AFP) – Germany's attempt to create a multi-cultural society has failed completely, Chancellor Angela Merkel said at the weekend, calling on the country's immigrants to learn German and adopt Christian values.
Merkel weighed in for the first time in a blistering debate sparked by a central bank board member saying the country was being made "more stupid" by poorly educated and unproductive Muslim migrants.
"Multikulti", the concept that "we are now living side by side and are happy about it," does not work, Merkel told a meeting of younger members of her conservative Christian Democratic Union (CDU) party at Potsdam near Berlin.
"This approach has failed, totally," she said, adding that immigrants should integrate and adopt Germany's culture and values.
"We feel tied to Christian values. Those who don't accept them don't have a place here," said the chancellor.
"Subsidising immigrants" isn't sufficient, Germany has the right to "make demands" on them, she added, such as mastering the language of Goethe and abandoning practices such as forced marriages.
Merkel spoke a week after talks with Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan in which they pledged to do more to improve the often poor integration record of Germany's 2.5-million-strong Turkish community.
Turkish President Abdullah Gul, in a weekend interview, also urged the Turkish community living in Germany to master the language of their adopted country.
"When one doesn't speak the language of the country in which one lives that doesn't serve anyone, neither the person concerned, the country, nor the society," the Turkish president told the Suedeutsche Zeitung.
"That is why I tell them at every opportunity that they should learn German, and speak it fluently and without an accent. That should start at nurseries."
German President Christian Wulff was due for a five-day visit to Turkey and talks with the country's leaders on Monday.
The immigration debate has at times threatened to split Merkel's conservative party, and she made noises to both wings of the debate.
While saying that the government needed to encourage the training of Muslim clerics in Germany, Merkel said "Islam is part of Germany", echoeing the recent comments of Wulff, a liberal voice in the party.
Horst Seehofer, the leader of the CDU's Bavarian sister party, CSU, who represents the right-wing, recently said Germany did not "need more immigrants from different cultures like the Turks and Arabs" who are "more difficult" to integrate.
While warning against "immigration that weighs down on our social system", Merkel said Germany needed specialists from overseas to keep the pace of its economic development.
According to the head of the German chamber of commerce and industry, Hans Heinrich Driftmann, Germany is in urgent need of about 400,000 engineers and qualified workers, whose lack is knocking about one percent off the country's growth rate.
The integration of Muslims has been a hot button issue since August when a member of Germany's central bank sparked outrage by saying the country was being made "more stupid" by poorly educated and unproductive Muslim migrants with headscarves.
The banker, Thilo Sarrazin, has since resigned but his book on the subject -- "Germany Does Itself In" -- has flown off the shelves, and polls showed considerable sympathy for some of his views.
A recent study by the Friedrich Ebert Foundation think tank showed around one-third of Germans feel the country is being "over-run by foreigners" and the same percentage feel foreigners should be sent home when jobs are scarce.
Nearly 60 percent of the 2,411 people polled thought the around four million Muslims in Germany should have their religious practices "significantly curbed."
Far-right attitudes are found not only at the extremes of German society, but "to a worrying degree at the centre of society," the think tank said in its report.
"Hardly eight weeks have passed since publication of Sarrazin's theory of decline, and the longer the debate continues to a lower level it falls," the weekly Der Spiegel commented Sunday.

She's bending to popular sentiment in Germany. And the German national football team is largely multicultural - Ozil is Turkish and that's the cultural group that most of the backlash is against.
In fact, anti-immigrant sentiment is getting a lot more popular in Western Europe. This always happens when there is unemployment and economic problems - the immigrants are blamed. -

It's a little bit of a motif in Western Society these days. But the Germans, who apparently still think hiring PR people is a scam, have a little bit of a checkered past when it comes to beef with some other famous non-Christian people being part of their society. -

When you see immigrants come into your country and refuse to assimilate, cause increase violent crime and at the same time spit in the face of the original inhabitanst of the country and flaunting their dislike for the country and its people then It's perfectly understandable for her to come to this conclusion. I find it funny that whites are supposed to lay down and die and not say anything when other groups come into what was at one time a white majority country, ? on them and turn their countries into ? and they're not supposed to say a word and let it happen. ? that.
You don't have to live in germany you can go back to your original home country if you have a problem with it.
Keep up the good fight and I hope she isn't made to feel guilty into changing her position. i thought Germany's economy was booming so much so that they gained back almost all of their jobs lost during the recession. -

Most of the Africans/natives had no concept of a nation state or claimed ownership to the land like in South Afirca, canada and north america. However, I wouldn't care one bit if no whites lived in Africa. Canada and North America, the natives lost that battle so that is a lost cause not even worth entertaining. They're part of the western world now and I would venture to say for the better. However, while whites brought other populations into the modern world, I doubt these turks bring anything of value outside of labor and I doubt that labor is of such value compared to their inability to integrate and know how to act and function in their host country.I agree 100%. Actually, they had a concept that extended beyond the narrow confines of ethnicity and nationality, because they recognize that the Earth is the domain of the people. They had empires like Songhay, Ghana, and Mali that incorporated different groupings of people. Africans traded with Asians regularly before the European knew there were other people on the planet.
Africans had been in every corner of the Earth, including North America. Greedy whites came with this backward selfish concept of me, me , me . This is a result of their time spent in a deprived state without any human or civilizing influences when they languished in Europe. This led to a severe form of psychosis that can be seen and felt today.
You may not care, but Intelligent whites do. Europe is barren. And it wasn't whites that brought anybody into modern anything. Whites were brought out of darkness twice. Once by Continental Africans when Greece was just an isle of savages, and a second time during the Renaissance when Europe was on the verge of fratricidal conflict.
I don't know if you noticed but Europe and the White Western world are losing their grip and control over the nations of the Earth.The Asian nations are smothering you to the point you won't have any influence over yonder. Japan and South Korea are beginning to turn and are beginning to see that the future no longer rests with you. From South America to Asia they are beginning to diminish. Might never made right. That sounds fair however, whether slavery existed within sub-Saharan African societies before the arrival of Europeans is a hotly contested point between Afrocentric and Euro centric academics. What is certain is that Africans were subjected to several forms of slavery over the centuries, including chattel slavery under both the Muslims with the trans-Saharan slave trade, and Europeans through the trans-Atlantic slave trade. So given that fact can you honestly say it was the Europeans who instigated the whole process? or just maybe it was Africans who started the whole process & to this day in many Muslim countries it still exists. BTW kingblazer84 how come you only like to tell half of the story and enjoy telling the parts about what Europeans did and not acknowledge what Africans did to their own people.
