Sony today unveiled a new loyalty program called PlayStation Rewards, which gives Sony fans a chance to win bonus content.

The amount of rewards given to any one member is based on the level of engagement that person has with the PS3 or PSP, which includes playing new games for the first time, downloading content from the PlayStation Store, downloading music and videos, or taking surveys.

There's a three-tier rewards system in which members progress through, "Select," "Pro" and "Legendary." The more engaged a member is, the better the rewards. The profile page for Rewards members will display a progress meter to show how close they are to the next level.

PlayStation Rewards will begin as an invitation-only beta, which includes early adopters of PlayStation Plus and Gamer Advisory Panel (GAP) members. The beta will start out to only include PS3 owners, but will add PSP at a later date.

The program will open up to all registered PlayStation Network members for free starting Spring 2011.

"PlayStation's most important asset is its loyal fans and PlayStation Rewards gives us an opportunity to show our appreciation for their amazing passion and desire to continually evolve the gaming world," said Susan Panico, senior director, PlayStation Network.

"We can't thank our fans enough for the feedback they have given us over the years and look forward to even more dialog to help us evolve PlayStation Rewards to make it the best possible loyalty program it can be."

Some of the rewards that can be obtained by participating in this program include exclusive PSN avatars that display member status in the program, dynamic themes and PlayStation Home content, members-only sweepstakes and giveaways.

The first prize Sony is handing out is a trip to the 2011 Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas.
