Statistics published by top game developer Tose show that with 42 million the total number of PS3s sold globally have exceeded the Xbox 360 by a million units.
The statistics coe by way of a presentation by Tose (a prolific Kyoto-based game developer best known for not being known, as their games as usually credited exclusively to the company outsourcing the work to them, most often Nintendo) at the Kyoto Cross Media Experience 2010, published by Famitsu.
Global sales of each major console to date:
PlayStation 3: 42,000,000
Xbox 360: 41,000,000

check the thread "VGCHARTZ has lost all credibility". its probably on page 2-3. They were WAY off with their numbers. -

the most impression thing isnt just that Sony started a year later, but the fact that ps3 has alwasy been the most expensive system on the market. Wii undercut them out of the gate, and MS vowed that 360 will always be cheaper since they got that dinky lil arcade version

This isn't official. Official numbers still show M$ ahead by a couple mill...but lets just pretend they are.
The big picture is and will always be that Sony completely lost over a 50 million consoles market share advantage in one gen. M$ already won. -
the even bigger picture is that out of those 41,000,000 360s, a quarter of them dont even work.
