BUT HE'S WHITE!!!

The 35-year-old Long Beach man killed in an officer-involved shooting Sunday was holding a water spigot, not a gun, Long Beach Police officials said Monday.

Two Long Beach police officers responded to a 911 call at 4:40 p.m. Sunday from a neighbor reporting an intoxicated man holding a "six shooter" that looked like an antique gun in the 5300 block of East Ocean Avenue.

"The officers had a position of cover and were observing the suspect while other officers were en route," said Sgt. Dina Zapalski, a spokeswoman for the Long Beach Police Department.

Zapalski said Douglas Zerby was in a seated position when he extended his arms while holding the gun-like object and pointed it at an officer.

The investigation revealed that Zerby was actually holding a black pistol-grip water nozzle with a metal tip, she said.

He was shot in the torso with a shotgun and handgun, then handcuffed, Zapalski said. He died at the scene.

Zerby's older sister, Eden Marie Biele, said she was "mortified" upon hearing of her brother's death.

"Our brother was killed for no reason," she said. "We're outraged. You can't get ? in the city of Long Beach and not get shot? You're trying to do the responsible thing and not drive and you get shot? Is that standard protocol? They didn't wait for backup, they just shot him."

Zerby had been waiting on the stoop for his friend to come home. He often frequented the building after he had been drinking and was known among the neighbors, his sister said. It was a new neighbor who was not familiar with her brother who made the 911 call, she said.

The family will be holding a vigil at the scene of the shooting at 5:30 p.m. Monday.

Hmm, shotgun and handgun? that little too extreme. The cops who were observing him, could of did better than that. Could of use binoculars to see what he was actually holding in his hand....

You can imagine how much the media is sympathizing with the man's family....

I've seen tape of them crying in front of the police.

They were even asking the captain WHY they couldn't have used another method.....I don't think I've ever seen that before....

Yeah, Like I said, they could of use binoculars to further to see what he was carrying in his hand. If they did that, he would of been alive right now.

LOL. Janklow would clap you if you pointed that at him. What a ? idiot.

(of course, if Mr. Zerby was black, then it'd be the biggest injustice since the Middle Passage lol)

Have no idea why, but Janklow came to mind when I heard this story.....perhaps its the ? , gun wielding part.

While the story is "nuttin' new", the media coverage of the story is sickening.....

^^ But who said that's what happened? Neighbors reportedly heard up to 27 gun shots. The 911 report mentions a neighbor called who said he had a gun. GRANTED: that damn water nozzle looks like a gun, but anyone with some sense knew the police were approaching with a "shoot to ? " mentality.

Guess if I wanted someone bumped off.....hmmmmm :scheme:

I ain't saying what did or didn't happen, but I AM saying that police have lied before to cover their ass, and they'll eventually do it again...

UPDATE 1:54pm | The press conference regarding the fatal police shooting of a Long Beach man on Sunday ended abruptly when Long Beach Chief of Police Jim McDonnell walked away from the podium as the victim's family continued to emotionally interrupt him.

The family of 35-year old Douglas Zerby took issue as Chief McDonnell revealed new details about the shooting, such as the fact that officers shot Zerby with at least two shotgun rounds and apparently did not identify themselves or ask him to surrender the object in his hands. McDonnell said that Zerby extended his arms, holding the metal water nozzle, and two officers shot him. Zerby was pronounced deceased at the scene.

"You shot him with a shotgun?!" screamed a family member of Zerby as Chief McDonnell described the incident. She was escorted out of the press conference but later returned, and was one of several who openly criticized officers' actions.

McDonnell paused, then continued that Zerby was also truck with six handgun rounds. He was visibly uncomfortable during such outbursts, which happened periodically through the press conference. He repeatedly issued his condolences and called the incident "A tragedy."

Zerby did not live at the residence but family members say he was visiting a friend, and was sitting in the courtyard because he was intoxicated and did not want to drive home.

McDonnell attempted to explain why officers did not speak with Zerby.

"The officers did not immediately contact the subject so that they could set up containment in the area," he said, "Fearing that if the subject walked out of the location with the gun, citizens and officers could be in harm's way."

McDonnell estimated that officers were on scene for about ten or fifteen minutes before the shooting occurred. He said that officers wanted to establish communication with the suspect.

"Unfortunately, due to the actions of Mr. Zerby, it never got to that point," he said.

McDonnell could not say exactly how close officers were to Zerby at the time of the shooting, but said that thirty or forty feet is out of range for tasers and that they were not an option.

Eden Marie Biele, who is Zerby's older sister, said that her family is in the process of retaining counsel and plans to file charges. Chief McDonnell vehemently disputed reports that Zerby had been shot 27 times, but could not say how many rounds hit.

At one point, a reporter asked the Chief whether there was any indication that Zerby was aware of the officers' presence or had responded to their commands, to which Biele said, "There were no commands!"

Officers had responded to a 9-1-1 call around 4:40pm Sunday from a neighbor who reported a man with what appeared to be a handgun. Police played the call recording during the press conference, and we will have it available for you to hear shortly.

Friends and family of Zerby will hold a vigil at 5:30pm tonight at the scene of the crime.

You mean to tell me that within 10 to 15 mins of being at the scene, in complete silence apparently, not one word like, I dunno "drop the gun" could've came out their mouths?

I'm all for benefit of the doubt....but c'mon now....

He didn't want to drive home ? , don't think this is the type of dude that's suicidal....

The not wanting to drive home ? is a ploy to make the reader find sympathy.

They didn't want to contact him before they made a perimeter around the area, pulling together one of those probably takes more than 10-15 minutes. ' Unfortunately, due to his actions'(pointing the nozzle at them) he was shot before they contained him and made first contact(put down your weapon).

Pointing a gun-like object or wielding anything that can be seen as a weapon towards a cop is foolish.

Makes sense that he was shot.

Wow, you're doing a lot of speculating about something neither you or I have any knowledge of.

What we know for a fact:

The Police shot an unarmed man
That same unarmed man had an object around him that looked similiar to a gun
The only people justifying their actions are the police
No witnesses or family find justification of their actions
The police have a history in covering up their errors by blaming it on the victims

Everything else is just conjecture until we know the rest of the facts....

Cops + man with Water nozzle = Dead Man
Cops + man with a wallet = Dead man
Cops + unarmed man running away = Dead Man
Cops + unarmed man not running away = Dead Man
Cops + Katrina Victims on bridge = Dead and burned man
Cops + Man face down handcuffed with a knee on his head = Dead Man

    See a pattern here?

Don't take much to get shot and killed by the cops.....
