There was a lack of substance back then. Majority of MCs used to rap about how great they were. Apart from a few like Chuck D. -

i agree, but at the time it was fun original and now atleast they could set a scene. nowadays, a love song contains random metaphors about big fat ? , at least theyre was a flowing story in the golden era -
90's > 80's

85 was the year when the deals started coming for those Artists, so it's tough to say a 5 year period of rap is better than a decade.
But there were definitely talented Artists around then and without the pioneers of this era, it wouldn't have been as easy for all the records of the 90's to drop. But Rap music evolved from these days and from the storytelling of Slick Rick to the flows of BDK to the emceeing of G Rap; it become deeper/more complex as more lyrical rhymes developed beginning with Rakim to 94 Nas. It evolved and therefore I find it hard to state that the 80's are better than the 90's. -

lol dope post but it's harsh when those artists had the opportunity to build upon those before them, but it's also a reason why the 90's are better than the 80's. Agreed. -

That's life. NBA and NFL, same way. They built off their predecessors and became better. Only natural but at the same time the 00's took a slight step back in both music and sports imo. -
Its all about the early 90's. the 80's were cool though
-
<<90s........
Bone Thugs better than Geto Boys? Biggie better than Kool G Rap? The Roots better than Public Enemy? Heeeeeeell no to all three!
And I never have a 'best decade' in hip-hop. To me it's 1986-1996 that I consider the best 'era'. That decade in itself contains classics upon classics. -
<<90s........
Eminem better than ace?
Roots better than public enemy?
3000 better than rakim?
Cmon son. What's your reasoning -

most 80's artist dropped better stuff in the 90's

You and Chuckie only came up 3 matchups worth discussing? Your pretty much proving my point. I couldve mixed the matchups around a few times and still the 90's would have the edge. No disrespect to the 80's at all, Im a 80's baby I just feel like the 90's was the pinnacle of Hip Hop -

Yep, but ain't no way Bone Thugs is better than Geto Boys for instance. Kool G Rap's best album is "Live and Let Die" (1992) and Public Enemy's best is "Fear of a Black Planet" (1990). To me, the best era in hip-hop is not from the start of a decade to it's end, it's from the mid-to-late 80s to early-to-mid 90s. And the best Geto Boys album is "Grip It! On That Other Level" (1989). But yeah, they dropped lots of dope stuff in the 90s too. There are only a couple of exceptions like Big Daddy Kane and Rakim who's 90s stuff and onwards can't match their two 80s albums.
Jungle Brothers is the perfect example of a 80s act that lost it entirely when the 90s entered.
And speaking of only 3 matches worth discussing. Ain't no way Jay-Z > Big Daddy Kane or Andre 3k > Rakim. And definitely not Ghostface > LL Cool J. Also N.W.A > any other group out there except Public Enemy.
Even though hip-hop has come a long way since the 80s, 1988 will always remain the best year of hip-hop IMO.
Name me another hip-hop year that has as many classic albums as 1988.

Okay fair enough, I understand what your saying. The ? began to creep in 97/98 -

That's what I'm saying. I refuse to say the 90s was the best era because it might make someone think ? years like 97 is better than "the year of classics" like 88 and 89. Therefore I'm somewhere in the middle and always consider 86-95/96 the best years. -
I prefer 90's hiphop you still had the 80's rappers, they were just better.
-
86-89 best rest rap era/golden age
90-93 post golden era
94-96 gangsta/? rap era
97-99 bling-bling era

80's and 90's were much better eras of rap than they are after biggie and pac died (with the exception of a few good ones).
