NOW THIS ? GUY IS DEFENDING THE WALL STREET BONUSES !!!
Clueless

I’m with Simon Johnson here: how is it possible, at this late date, for Obama to be this clueless?

The lead story on Bloomberg right now contains excerpts from an interview with Business Week which tells us:

President Barack Obama said he doesn’t “begrudge” the $17 million bonus awarded to JPMorgan Chase & Co. Chief Executive Officer Jamie Dimon or the $9 million issued to Goldman Sachs Group Inc. CEO Lloyd Blankfein, noting that some athletes take home more pay.

The president, speaking in an interview, said in response to a question that while $17 million is “an extraordinary amount of money” for Main Street, “there are some baseball players who are making more than that and don’t get to the World Series either, so I’m shocked by that as well.”

“I know both those guys; they are very savvy businessmen,” Obama said in the interview yesterday in the Oval Office with Bloomberg BusinessWeek, which will appear on newsstands Friday. “I, like most of the American people, don’t begrudge people success or wealth. That is part of the free- market system.”

Obama sought to combat perceptions that his administration is anti-business and trumpeted the influence corporate leaders have had on his economic policies. He plans to reiterate that message when he speaks to the Business Roundtable, which represents the heads of many of the biggest U.S. companies, on Feb. 24 in Washington.
Oh. My. ? .

First of all, to my knowledge, irresponsible behavior by baseball players hasn’t brought the world economy to the brink of collapse and cost millions of innocent Americans their jobs and/or houses.

And more specifically, not only has the financial industry has been bailed out with taxpayer commitments; it continues to rely on a taxpayer backstop for its stability. Don’t take it from me, take it from the rating agencies:

The planned overhaul of US financial rules prompted Standard & Poor’s to warn on Tuesday it might downgrade the credit ratings of Citigroup and Bank of America on concerns that the shake-up would make it less likely that the banks would be bailed out by US taxpayers if they ran into trouble again.

The point is that these bank executives are not free agents who are earning big bucks in fair competition; they run companies that are essentially wards of the state. There’s good reason to feel outraged at the growing appearance that we’re running a system of lemon socialism, in which losses are public but gains are private. And at the very least, you would think that Obama would understand the importance of acknowledging public anger over what’s happening.

But no. If the Bloomberg story is to be believed, Obama thinks his key to electoral success is to trumpet “the influence corporate leaders have had on his economic policies.”

We’re doomed.

REALLY BARRY? REALLY?

Some people in the comments are saying this is "all in the plan and he's just trying to look pro-business so when they screw up again people wont say it was his fault." But I'm not buying that ? . People are already ? at Wall Street so WTF is he saying this ? for?

Shout out to Paul Krugman for being a gangsta ass Economist. ? should wear a dollar bill face rag and just shoot up ? . I can tell through his writing he just sits at his desk and wants to throw his Nobel Prize Award a the president's Limo lol

I'm sorry but at this point Obama has tucked his tail a little too much for me. He's a ? ass president until further notice.

LOL This guy has bent on EVERY ISSUE. He just doesnt seem to have any LBJ in him at all. No kind of killer instinct. Every time he goes on the offensive on an issue 5 minutes later he's saying some ? to make friends again.

"I will fight for health care with a public option!" *1 month later* "Well I dont think a public option is all that important"

"I am shocked and appalled at these wall street bonuses! The American People want their money back!" *1 week later* "Well Im not against profit...."

    etc etc etc....

No. You were saying he wasnt getting anything done. My argument is that he is flip-flopping like a ? fish out of water.

The difference is he cant pass laws but he needs to learn how to bully congress into doing something like LBJ did so masterfully. He doesnt have the power to pass a law. But he does have influence. He just seems to be the only one that doesnt see it.

Then I dont know why the hell we were arguing then because I agree with that.

I just dont like when people say, "he isnt getting anything done," "why hasnt Obama passed any laws." Bunch of idiots dont know basic Constitutional protocol (Article 1 Section 1). So if that's all you were saying then I dontknow what happened. Maybe it was one of those threads where I replied to the title and not the thread.

but at least LBJ got ? done by arm twisting

That's because LBJ was in Congress for almost 30 years, was a 2 time Senate Majority leader, and had DIRT on ? to blackmail them with.

That baseball analogy was stupid, but other than that he didn't say anything new.

But what has White House aides even more bothered, however, is that fact that the president was simply using a tried and tested talking point only to have it treated like a major revelation. On that front, they're right.

In February 2009, Obama gave a speech on executive compensation in which he declared that, in American, "we don't disparage wealth. We don't begrudge anybody for achieving success. And we believe that success should be rewarded." In March 2009, Obama told the Business Roundtable that the job of a lawmaker is "not to disparage wealth, but to expand its reach." And in a brief statement on executive compensation in October 2009, Obama repeated the lines: "We don't disparage wealth; we don't begrudge anybody for doing well. We believe in success. But it does offend our values when executives of big financial firms -- firms that are struggling -- pay themselves huge bonuses, even as they continue to rely on taxpayer assistance to stay afloat."

Last I checked, he's still doing the Bank Tax and the Volcker Plan. Krugman later updated his post to clarify that he isn't freaked out over any policy stance, but rather the tone deafness of comparing bonuses to baseball salaries and the complete lack of any populist balance to his remarks in the interview. (i.e, praise the free market as a concept but then call CEOs ? )

The most likely result of this non-story is Obama making a mental note not to go around complimenting Bank CEOs. And Bloomberg won't another POTUS interview for a hot minute.

I'm sorry, the real question we should be asking is what the hell is Joe Biden doing? B/c we all know the only reason why he is in the VP office right now and not Hillary is b/c he was supposed to be Obama's attack dog when it came to getting sh*t in the Senate done.

DarcSkies is bringing it hard....and on the money. The Presidency requires LEADERSHIP to get things done. Complaining about the opposition party is for p****s and pretenders.

Anyone read anything about Obama and neuro-linguistic programming?

Kind of does explain why people think he's great even if he fvcks everything up.

I'll have to do some more of my own reading on NLP and read/watch his speeches myself.

From what I do know about subliminal verbal programming, he does seem like quite a likely candidate to be doing this, he's very sauve.

I agree with you but you know damn well he did this to get these people callin him a socialist, facist, communist, etc. off his back. unfortunately, it isn't going to work because those people that are sayin that are sayin it just because they havent liked him from the go and are Sarah Palin fans. He was damned from the start in my opinion.
