THRILLERI was around when both albums were out. I was in 5th grade when Thriller was out and I was 20 when Illmatic came out.
To put it in perspective, Thriller had #1 songs and top 40 hits. It sold approximately 40 million units according to the RIAA (Soundscan didn't start until 1991). The point I'm trying to make is that it wasn't an underground, critically acclaimed album, it was a mainstream, commercial album that got critical acclaim.
In elementary school kids wanted to be like Michael Jackson. People dressed like him and did the moonwalk like him. People imitated the way he danced.
You can't say any of that about Illmatic. I mean, me and my homies used to bump it in the car and we'd bug out over his lyrics, but it didn't have anywhere near the impact of Thriller. And if you don't comprehend what I'm saying I'll put it like this;
? didn't have the impact of Thriller,
All Eyes On Me didn't have the impact of Thriller,
Life After Death and No Way Out didn't have the impact of Thriller.
MMLP didn't have the impact of Thriller.
Get Rich Or Die Trying didn't have the impact of Thriller.
Speakerboxxx/Love Below didn't have the impact of Thriller
And in case you're wondering, Purple Rain, which came out a year later didn't have the impact of Thriller
