a poll they did. This was before Pac and Big got killed and the results show that they weren't as respected before they died. i been telling people that for the longest since i was old enough to remember those days but new school fans stay saying i'm wrong. yeah they had fans but neither was consideder GOAT until they died. Before then most talk was about KRS, LL, Rakim, Kane, Chuck D and a few more. LOL they voted both as a runner up in the overrated poll

People ? about the Source in 1995 and I remember it. Putting Mary J. Blige on the cover was seen as a sellout move.

    Feb 16 1995

    WHATS UP WITH THE SOURCE?
    TO BE PLAIN ****ING SIMPLE
THE MAG IS WACK. THE WRITERS OF THE MAG APPEARED TO ALL WALK OUT ON THE SOURCE

TO ME THIS ****ED ME UP BECAUSE THE SOURCE WAS THE **** TO FIND OUT WHATS GOING
ON IN THE HIP HOP WORLD. I MEAN THE OTHER MAGS OUT LIKE WORD UP AND VIBE AND
ETC.. DIDN'T STACK WELL WITH THE SOURCE BECAUSE TO SOME EXENT THEY REPRESENTED
THE REAL. LAST ****ING COUPLE OF ISSUES WERE SAD TO LOOK AT. I USED TO GET HYP
ED EVERYTIME I BOUGHT ONE. THE MAIN REASON FOR THE DECLINE TO ME IS THE STAFF
THAT TOOK OFF ON THE SOURCE. NOW THE NEW STAFF AINT PUTTING OUT AND I JUST HOP
ING THAT THEY DO GET SOME OF THE OLD WRITERS BACK AND SAVE THE ****. EVEN THAT
PHAT ***** THE RAP BANDIT NEED TO COME BACK!!!!!!

    Feb 23 1995

Yeah, that punk BUC WILD is now writin for the Source. Muthaphucka ain't
even outta high school tryin to school us bout hip-hop. Looks like the
Source's "Golden Age" has passed. You know I ain't gonna renew my
subscription! Once I saw Mary J. on the cover, I knew that was the end
of the Source's commitment to hip hop music. Don't get me wrong, Mary J.
is phat, but her makin the cover of the Source, a hip hop mag??? Even
though I enjoyed the article, that was VIBE material, not the Source's.
May the Source rest in peace.

This is classic like the Snoop Doggy Dogg one I posted earlier. LOL

    Oct 9 1992

I was listening to a local radio station here in Baltimore earlier today
and I heard a beat that I want some information on. I don't know the name of
the song but it's on the movie soundtrack for "Deep Cover" and it's done by MC
Ren and a brother named Snoopy something or other
    .

    Aug 11 1992

Has anyone out there got any info on 'Snoop Doggy Dogg'?, i saw him on
the Deep Cover video with Dre, hype style and dope lyrics.

    Apr 6 1992

Hey has anyone heard anything about the "Deep Cover" soundtrack???
It's Bill Duke's new film staring Larry Fishburne. And I heard Dre of NWA
does the music. But what about jams?? Anyone know?

And also, I heard the soundtrack to "Looters" is going to be more of
a Ice Cube / Ice-T album, with equal songs from both (and one duet).

    Jul 1 1992

    one-eight-seven ?

    anyone care to discipher
the meaning of this term. In Deep Cover with Dre and some new group
whose name escapes me, there's a really cool sounding line, but I have
no clue what the hell they're talking about.

    Yeah, and ya don't stop.

Vanilla Ice in the 90s is what Soulja Boy is now.

    Apr 21 1991

Why does everyone hate Vanilla Ice so much? I don't listen to much rap, but
it doesn't sound any different from any other stuff that's popular. Is it
because he's white? Seriously, what's the deal here?

    Apr 21 1991

The reason that comes to my mind the quickest when I think of Vanilla Ice
(and I don't think of him a lot, trust me) is that he is a PERPETRATOR in
every sense of the word. The boy totally lied about his past, saying that
he lived in a Miami ghetto when actually the sucker duck was maxxin in a
Dallas suburb. And what trips me out the most was that he practically had
the Top 40 (read: white) audience won, so much so that they were dishin
Dig 'Em Smacks (disses) to another sucker duck, MC Hammer (whom I don't like
either, but at least he didn't lie about his past.)

I have not got an inkling of respect for Vanilla Ice. Not because he's white,
(I used to dig 3rd Bass and the Beastie Boys) but because the boy has no
rhymes, he's lame, he's got no beat, the boy is just plain WACK. Period.

    Apr 23 1991

This amazes me. Vanilla Ice is to rap music what Donny Osmond was to
rock and roll. In 5 years, V-Ice will be relegated to "whatever
became of..." on Entertainment Tonight. In 10 years, he will be a
footnote (if that) in the history of music. Even pop-rap like MC
Hammer is a million times classier than Ice's act. Ice is less than nothing - a complete fabrication, worthy of
the New Kids or Tiffany. He's the watered-down version of the
    watered-down versions.

Every generation has its origintors and its pale (yes, both kinds)
imitators. I think that Vanilla Ice's closest analog would be Pat
Boone. In the fifties, Pat Boone covered r&b songs in the most
simpering, sad, pathetic way possible and racked in big bucks. In
fact, he was even a sex symbol for roughly the same demographic group
that Ice appeals to (little girls).

That's right, Vanilla Ice = Pat Boone.

    Apr 27 1991

Can anybody really take Vanilla White seriously? You just have to laugh.
He says he came from the streets. Doesn't he come from Texas or Long
Island or something? The guy's a hypocrite through and through.

    Apr 28 1991

If V-Ice ever tried to step in Stong-Island, he'd probably get shot (depending
on what part of the island) If I saw him, I'd throw every ? at him I know
and make up some as I went along. I think he's from Texas somewhere around
    Whacksville (east of SuckerCity).

    Apr 28 1991

Well, I was reading an article anout him the other day and the reporter
mentioned that White younger-teenaged, middle class, suburban girls were
his main audience by far. Almost exclusively so. In fact, he has the same
demographic appeal as New Kids On The Block (which is interesting in that
the New Kids took a primarily "Black" sound and repackaged it into
    commercial pap, quite on purpose

    May 7 1991

Vanilla Ice is no great talent, but since when has talent had anything to do
with popularity in any artistic medium? There are a million rock bands better
than Bon Jovi, a thousand TV shows better than America's Funniest Home Videos,
10 to the nth power movies with more artistic merit than Pretty Woman, but
guess what sells? Packaging and non-offensiveness (something that fits in
comfortably with the intended audience's world view) will get you a lot farther
than genius when it comes to raking in the bucks!

    This has been accelerated
in music by the dominance of videos as a means of spreading new music. The
caucasian teenager/preadolescent female flipping through her family's cable
channels is going to be more likely to stop when she sees a conventionally
(i.e. like the guys in "MY" neighborhood) handsome youth on the screen, and
unless the singing is AWFUL she's going to stick around and "listen", but
really she's looking- do you notice that many pop bands have lyrics that are
undecipherable without the video? If there were no videos and it wasn't
apparent to the radio listener that Vanilla Ice was white and photogenic,
would his songs have attracted as much attention? Nyaah.

    Caucasians
aren't evil or unique for reacting this way - I noticed an intense interest in
Wimbledon among African Americans who had never previously followed tennis
when Zena (gorgeous) Garrison played. BTW, the above comments are not an
excuse for the shameful way the music industry has exploited and continues to
exploit African American artists, and some of these factors are of no doubt an
important part of the Vanilla Ice popularity "puzzle", but it's not all of it.

Eminem is totally WACK! He only gets so much props because of his race.
Since he's Caucasian he is held to a LOWER standard of MCing. His voice
is annoying (sounds just like the beasties) and he has average garden
variety lyrical ability -- nothing special, nothing deep, nothing
complex, nothing more than any common wannabe off the street.

He has a cartoonish quality because he's a joke! If he was African
American or Hispanic he'd get as much respect as the puffmeister. . .no
label would sign his no talent ass. . .and he'd be ridiculed for dissing
"hip-hop" with his extreme stereotypical image (size 50 pants on his 24
inch waist, constantly grabbin a ? that ain't there, jackin and
pulling a gat on that old lady in his video, cussin every 3rd word, on
    and on).

Also, what kind of name is M&M? Sure it looks dope when it's spelled
Eminem. But it pronounced like the ? CANDY -- M&M -- pure
    wackness.

El-Producto (from company flow) got way better skills than M&M.
    later...Chris

Tupac's lung removed: will he ever rap again?

Damn, damn, damn! Stoopid fools. Because of stoopid clowns, Pac is
fighting for his life and has his whole career threatened. The guy has
lost a lung? How the **** can you rap with one lung? I hope they catch
the ? . I really hope for that this is not coast related, because
then the west coast privilleges of Nas, Mobb Deep, Chino, Biggie, Foxxy,
Puffy would be forever suspended. Knowing Suge, I know somebody's cap's
about to get peeled. What a ****ing tragedy.

Personally, i think that Jay-Z is better than "It was Written" NAS for
the sole fact that Jay-Z's fake tails of gangster life sound so much
more convincing and believable than NAS who is completely out of his
element and takes everything from the few Robert DeNiro movies he has
    seen
