Subject: Rap is on a downward trend
Print | Individual message | Show original | Report this message | Find messages by this author

This is not an easy thing to say, but rap music is on a downward trend.
I've been listening to this hip hop since about '83.. I've watched
the different trends in rap, and I've never really seen it as bad is
    this.

What are my reasons? Mainly because the commercialization of Hip Hop
has reached a stellar level. I mean, you got Shaquille O'neil signed to
Jive, coming out with an album that was produced by some of the most
respected producers in Hip Hop, and then coming out with another album
a year later??!! Then you got an entire album of basketball players working
with so-called underground ? like Wu-Tang clan!?! You got
wack-ass Tag-Team coming out with 28 versions of the same ?
song - Whoomp there it is, Whoomp (addams family) there it is, Si es lo es,
Whoomp there she went (Micky mouse version), etc.. then you got a rap
album done for Disney characters, Rappers on the Street fighter soundtrack,
    the list goes on...

The way the rap industry is gearing up, any fool can get on the mic and
become a platinum artist. Listening to some of the rappers that are
out, you can tell that they've been doing it for maybe a year or two -
or even worse as seen by that basketball soundtrack.

And from a production end, the ? is about as bad. Fools is re-using
loops like crazy. "Between the Sheets" is in about 7 different songs.
    People don't give a ? about chopping ? up anymore. It's like, I
listen to a new rap album, and at least half the ? I've already
    heard before.

The thing is, I can understand why its happening. Corporate America has
seen that rap can make money, so they start waving thousands in the
face of rappers and producers. It's difficult to turn that kind of money
down, so you got fools doing ? that they probably don't want to do...

    Anyway... what do y'all think?

The only thing I can't stop thinking of is the Jay Z of old. Several
years back he was with a rappa named Jaz(or something like that) and
doing some comedic Hawaiin **** about picking up women on the beach.
Now, he totally flipped the script and is out "
    presidents to represent him."
Since when did he become the mack of the year?

Umm, Usenet goes as far back as 1981.

These forums are indeed real, for they were being archived back in 1995 and Google acquired all of this in 2001.

Internet was created by the military I think in the 80s. I remember my cousin doing sports forums back in the early 90s. So there had to of been rap forums then too.

Alright, whoever's tryin to ? TuPac got a F*%@ed up aim. It
could have been Biggie who pulled the trigger, or would Shug have done
it. Peep this. What if Shug and Tupac got into it the night before.
Tupac could have threatened to leave Death Row. When this happened Shug
was probably afraid that TuPac was going to tell everyone about Shug
putting a hit on TuPac's Ex- Friend back in New York. Think about it!
Tupac's friend was shot 2 years after Tupac was shot on the exact same
    day he was shot on.
I was just hypothesizing, so before you get ready to email me
back, know that this is not the truth. It could've happened!!!!
    Brian Alexander Johnson
    "Alexander The Great"
"Even when they ? me, They can never take the
    Game from a young G,"
    -Tupac Shakur

What the hell is he getting shot with, paperclips?!

I must say, I really wasn't down with it before, but lately, the south has

    Well ? 'em.
As far as I'm concerned, nothin' betta could happen to hip hop than to
have the mainstream public not be interested in it. Mainstream interest
is the reason we have wack ? like Gangsta's Paradise and Skee Lo and
all this radio friendly rap. Has anyone heard that Stayin' Alive remake?
That ? is LESS than hella stupid ? wack. And Mainstream is
the reason we have that stuff coming out.
Thats also another reason we have less creativity in hip hop today.
Mainstream leaving is the best thing to happen to rap..
    Date: 1996/02/26

Trust me, it is evolving and will continue to evolve. When it stops evolving
is when it will die. I don't see that happening for a long time if ever. Just
compare the rap that was around in 1976, with that of 1986 (my favorite era),
and 1996. VERY different. Who knows what it'll sound like in 2006?

    Date: 1996/04/05

Did you say that I was ignorant! How dare you speak like that when you
know so little about real hip-hop.
You represent the thing that bothers me the most in alt.rap...an
unfounded, stupid and incorrect opinion and dis of someone who is of a
    higher learning bracket than you.
Do you have any idea whatsoever about hip-hop.
    Dre is commercial...and very wack.
Listen up now and listen good:
    *Funkmaster Flex is real hip-hop.
*Kool Dj EQ is real hip-hop.
    *Redman/? is real hip-hop.
*Mix tapes/freestyles/real skills on the 1's and 2's
    is real hip-hop.
*Dre...with his wack ass DJ skills..and Snoop
pumping out a played out g-funk song is wack.
YOU KNOW NOTHING ABOUT HIP-HOP...IF YOU THINK YOU DO TEST ME...ON ANY
ASPECT WHATSOEVER. Q. MY ASS...TO PROVE I'M REAL.
NOW YOU KNOW SO MUCH ABOUT RAP THAT YOU
    SIMPLE QUESTIONS:
Q1.) Give me a detailed analysis of how hip-hop originated.
    In your answer include:
    1. The actual starting block of hip-hop/rap in the US
    2. What other types of music were the building blocks of the
    rap/hip-hop sounds?
    3. How did hip-hop get the sluggish sound to it's beat?
    4. What did the rapping originate from?
    5. Name specific crews from specific countries which were instrumental
    in the rap sound...
    6. Which particular city did the first rap come from, and roughly
    what year?
ONLY ONCE YOU'VE ANSWERED THESE QUESTIONS CORRECTLY WILL I SHOW ANY
    RESPECT FOR YOUR WACK ASS....
    NOW ANSWER THEM
    iLL oNE 96

    Damn...lol just like nowadays.

    On Tupac's death:
Exactly, It's a lousy shame that some people can't respect the
gift of life. The guy may have written the worst music sending
out a terrible message and he may have caused a lot of problems,
but that isn't a reason yo be glad of his death. He was a living
and breathing human and I feel bad for those who are so desensitized
that they actually are sick enough to rejoice about it.
Sorry to be disrespectful, but I had to do gigs with the guy.He didn't
give respect to anyone. He treated people like ? .He promoted violence,
so thats what he got.Go ahead flame him,he would have flamed you if he
    had a computer.Doug6
Listen, if 2pac had any respect and love for his friends and family he
wouldn't have been such an idiot to let himself get into a situation
where people *wanted* to ? him. For all practical purposes the guy
was a criminal and a gangster just looking for trouble and he got it and
the only ones left to suffer from his moronic criminal lifestyle are the
friends and family he left behind. His friends and family should be
irrate that he treated them with such little respect. I would be mad as
    hell.
    No silence here
    Mary
? . You think 2pac rapped (talked!) because he "loved to do it"?
No way. He did it for the money and the women. He "loved to do it," huh?
Is *that* why he did those liquor commercials? He was a sell-out.
    >Tupac was 25! He was very young and is allowed at such an age to make
    >mistakes..its part of growing up.

    That's ? ? . "Oh, woops! I've killed and ruined innocent
peoples' lives, but hey, I'm YOUNG and it was only a MISTAKE!" Yeah
right. Start using your brain, pal. Do you actually think this world
will still be around in 100 years if we adhere to philosophies such as
    yours?
    > Now we are all left to ponder what
    >MIGHT have been? Would he have left Death Row records..would he have
    >distanced himself from that scene...etc.

He would have robbed banks, caused trouble, and got shot by someone else.
    THAT'S what would have happened.
    >all I can say is he was never given the chance and its a damn shame

    "Never given a chance"? You sound like a brain-washed, ? , wannabe.
How wasn't he given a chance? Well, he wasn't allowed to rob, ? , beat,
and terrorize and get away with it, if that's what you mean. Enough of
this cry-baby ? . There's too much of that in today's society. We
don't need ? -ups like 2pac to ruin life for everyone else.
    Good riddance.

Now it's funny when you see people ? about rap then but trust me it was better then. This is coming from somebody who was around then. You never know how good something is until you lose it. People are always going to hate because they can. I remember back in 1994 when people were complaining about rap being dead then (i.e. Common "I Used To Love H.E.R.")
