People like to discount Jay's career. Saying he only did what he did because the lane was wide open for him after Biggie/Pac died. People like to act like its sheer luck that this ? is worth $500 Million, basically synonymous with the Black American dream & still relevant 16 years after his debut.
This ? Jay is basically the 0.001%. Dude is in uncharted waters. It's hilarious that ? just KNOW Biggie would be where Jay's at. So many things would have to go right for Biggie & he was already ? up on many areas. I'll explain in depth.

Honestly, none of us know where either Big nor Jay would be had Big lived. For all we know, big could had oprah's networth or he could've been a washed up rapper collaboratin with in the moment artists. ? Big probably would've had his own roc-a fella dynasty (he did say that he was gonna become a manager). For all we know, we could've been callin Jay underrated today and he would be a revered underground hero like Kweli or Mos. Maybe Jay would've been where he's at now If big were still alive.

Reason #1: Staying Relevant
99% of the rappers from the 90s were out of the public eye by the mid 2000s. DMX can't sell anymore. Method Man is done with. WuTang is done as far as the mainstream goes. Cube is doing movies. Snoop is a shell of himself. Dre eating good off of Headphones. Nas isn't as popular as he once was. LL can't go copper. Ja was brutally thrown out lol. Camron fell off. Mase got chased out of Harlem....again. The Lox are dead. Raekwon & Ghost are ehh.
Odds are Biggie would've lost the battle of staying relevant as well.
The only ? from the 90s left are Jay & Em (who really doesn't count coming in 99).

Reason #2: "Paperwork"
Jay came in as a CEO. Biggie came in as an artist. Biggie asked Puff for a deal. Jay realized no labels were ? with him & decided to ram the door down anyway, using his savings to start Rocafella. This right here should HIGHLIGHT the different perspectives between the two. Because of this, Jay was awarded a certain level of creative freedom Biggie never had. Puff basically owned him. -

Jay chose to "ram the door down" because he had no other option, it was either that or back to the block ...
Lets not act as if jay had visions of being a CEO from jump, nah them visions only came when it became clear his visions of being signed were blind visions ...

Reason #3: Work Ethic
3 years into Jay's career (1996 to 1999), Jay had released 3 albums, was preparing the 4th, moved 5 million records with Vol. 2, came off the Hard Knock Life Tour & launched one the highest grossing urban clothing lines of all time.
3 years into Big's career (1994 to 1997), he released one album (though a Hip Hop classic) and was close to dropping his follow up. Biggie did have plans for Mint before he passed away however.
Just seems like comparing the two, Jay was hustling a little harder. Albums every year. Taking advantage of his celebrity by branding himself & creating offshoot ventures. -
i c/s this thread. t/s has valid points. biggie was more of a traditional rapper and jay came out the gates as a CEO who rapped. at this point in time, had big lived, his music would be more acclaimed than jays, but jay would be more relevant/rich than big.
-
Reason #4: Surrounding Himself with a Talent
Jay had The Diplomats (Cam, Jimmy, Juelz), State Property (Beans, Free, Young Gunz), Kanye West.
Biggie had Junior Mafia, Lil Kim, Mase & The Lox.
Personally, I preferred DipSet & State Prop (secondary Rocafella acts) to any of the secondary acts on Bad Boy but, some people might disagree. I'll make my point short though.
Kanye West > anyone of Biggie's underlings.
Having your young gun keep you relevant > Having a bunch of leeches who need you to stay afloat.
PS. Big discovered Cam but, got him a deal with Untertainment. -
Reason #5: "Baddest Chick in the Game Wearing my Chain"
Alot of Jigga Warriors are too proud to admit it but, Beyonce raised Jay's profile. Though she needed him to go solo back in the day (Remember all the Jay-Z features on Crazy in Love?), once she blew up, soccer moms across the country knew who that big lip ? was. Jay could've chose any bad model broad to rock with but, chose a ? who makes anywhere from $60-$90 million a year. Being with Beyonce made Jay "tolerable" enough to go on Oprah. That ? knew what he was doing.
Biggie on the other hand. Wifed up Faith Evans. Probably would've ended up with Charli Baltimore. -
No ones for sure. BIG had plans to go behind the scenes at bad boy and work with up and coming artists.

You ? are ? and are ignorant of history
Jigga got his fast flow from Jaz-O
And Jigga got his current flow from Biggie
Point blank period...Biggie started that poppin bottles and ? models ?
Naw he wouldn't have been where Jigga is at...he would have surpassed him
If it wasn't for Biggie's flow, Jigga wouldn't have made it to where he is...
People don't know how talented Biggie was when it came to his raps
Hence ignorant threads like these... -
No one's saying Big would be where Jay is at but lets not act like a void wasn't opened by his death.
Same with French Montana and Max-B. Iono if max woulda been collaborating with Rick Ross and be signed to Bad Boy but if he hadn't got hemmed up, I doubt Montana woulda been able to shine on his own and fill that niche as the "New York ? with the catchy hooks and coke/street talk" cuz that was Biggavellis thing. -

Blah blah blah....this thread not just about rapping/albums/flow/whatever. Its about whether Biggie had what it took to be where Jay is at now career and status wise.
Diddy himself says he sees Jay as his peer. That Jay put him on to alot of sh*t. If Diddy sees Jay as his peer & Biggie was an artist at Bad Boy, what the ? does that tell you breh? -

i agree 100% , ? are crazy to think that biggie would have had the commercial or corporate success jay has seen. a large part of being a celeb or icon is the look, and no ? , but jay has the clean cut, brown skin, non aggressive, non threatening look that white folks can accept.
biggie was a fat black ? who was a great rapper but wasnt nearly as marketable. and were not even gonna talk about what he does in business meetings, biggie would have never been corporate -
Man all of this is ? . No one will know what would have happened and no one ever will. Big was just 24 years old when he died.
By the time he would have been 35 so many things have changed in the world that damn near every scenario is a possibility. He could have become the undisputed GOAT. He could have become a ? without a deal that no one cared about no more. He could have become the owner of Slim Fast.
No one will ever know thats the ? up part when a man dies so young....So stop with the fantasies smh -

? , you trying to be smart ? ...I know what the ? this thread is about and still the point remains...Biggie would have surpassed Jigga because Biggie along with Jaz-O, were the foundations of Jigga's fortune and fame...
But naw, yo ? didn't get that cause yo ? can't see ? beyond the yes man...
Herb ass ?

I look at it in terms of whether he would of stayed affiliated with Puff. Puff was gonna make it rich no matter what.......I don't think Big had the business mind that Jay has, and without Puff, would of still been the GOAT rapper but may not be financially as powerful as what Jay is....
I agree on the point about Beyonce being a commodity......that's a bad ass ? yo........she will double/triple most man's worth just by turning up to events with her on your side. She talented as ? too.....
Damn, now I'm thinking bout Beyonce fine ass, for a grown ass man such as myself......this video is as good as watching porn......bad ass ? yo......

Thanks
you know ? here can't comprehend correctly...
i get tired of the whole "Jay only where he at cuz Big not here" ? . People who favor Big look at Jay-Z sitting on top of the world and feel disgusted that a ? who was relatively unknown in 1996, ended up as the King of all this sh*t. Its like being that dude on the block, going to jail for 20 years & coming out to learn the ? you used to pick on became the HNIC.
? need to be real though. Biggie took it to one spot. Jay took it 20 spots ahead. I seriously doubt Big could've done the same.

Jay threw his own savings in? I thought it was Biggs and Dame that bank rolled him in the beginning of Roc-A_Fella... -

Nah. It was Biggs. They all threw in but, Biggs had the most.

T/S makes legitimate points, but ? think there is a 0% chance that BIG wouldn't still be selling 5+ Million records a year right now if he were still alive.

keep in mind biggie dropped the junior mafia album in 95, and was on most of the songs. then he was gonna drop life after death in 96, but it got pushed back to 97.
