"Been hoppin' out the BM with your BM
Taking her to places you couldn't go with your per diem"

Jay Z on 'Three Kings' taking yet another slick shot at Nas?

When Jay said "Hoppin' out the BM (BMW) with your BM (Baby Mama)" it immediately made me think of his lines about Carmen from 'Super Ugly' when he was beefin' with Nas

I know him and Nas are supposed to be cool now but Jigga is funny styles like that....

Exactly. Sometimes it can ruin a songs playback quality if it's all "? ___, ? ____, etc." especially when it's a few years after. They start sounding like mixtape disses

Subliminal diss songs are the best cuz the songs last longer that those '? him/her', 'suck my ? ' type of songs.
E.g. I can still listen to Long Kiss Goodnight and Drop a Gem on em, they are lyrical subliminal classics; but i can't listen to hit em up, the songs long expired...

? going at Lil Troy, but not directly saying his name.
? ain't say his name because Lil Troy previously sued Scarface for "defamation of character and slander" on a previous diss.

Gotta love a good subliminal shot.

You can go back and see beef bubbling before the overt disses. The most obvious of this is the Jay/Nas thing. If you listen to some of their previous stuff now, you could see them baiting each other to see who was going to be the first to overtly step up.

That "ask Nas he don't want it with Hov" wasn't the first shot, they had been going at it for awhile. Nas took a shot at Bleek just to be sure but it was definitely some heat coming from Rocafella towards Nas before Bleek or Jay mentioned it.

Of course we know now that it was all over Carmen but back then we had no clue.

I'll try to lay out a timeline of ? I caught personally:

Nas "How We Livin" (w/ AZ) I forget the year, I think 1996 or 1997--
"Is That yo ? in my 6/ turning up the volume when she hear my hits?"

    About 2 years later (1998-1999) Jay-Z drops "Is That Yo ? "...
"She got you whipped, got your kids
Got your home, but that's not your ?
You share that girl, don't let 'em hear daddy he url
It'll make 'em sick that his favorite chick
    Ain't saving it, unfaithful ? "

Nas comes back in 1999-2000 with "Come Get Me":
You don't like me clown? Now you wanna take me down?
If I bring my face around, you gon' do what? You butt
Your crew knew I blew up, I been shinin - baseball diamonds
    ? rings for your chicklings
? know what my nine pearl handle's about
? you say girlie mouth? Get it crunk like the ? South
And I know you see me flossed out, multi-milli-i
Hear your ? talk about me, you give her the cold eye?
Girls dig you, imagine what she feel for me?
You make hot songs, but she know you steal from me

Jay then of course mentions Nas by name after that.

Now there may be some things I missed and just for those that think I'm reaching: the overt disses basically lay out the path.

Hov ? Carmen and knew that was his trump card if a battle broke out ("you know who did you know what with you know who/lets keep that between me and you" [for now])

There's a lot that goes into that "for now" basically meant that he was going to spill but that he wouldn't if Nas didn't respond, which of course he did and Jay spilled the beans.

I come to that conclusion because of course that's ultimately what happened and of course because of "Last Real ? Alive":

"A quiet man who used to be alone planning
Baby moms thought I was too quiet, couldn't stand it
She hit the streets, later on she hittin' the sheets
With a rapper who wanted me on his songs thinking he strong
I taught her how to watch for cars that might follow
Taught her street ? that I know her weakness was shine yo"

And to put a nice little bow on the whole story...
Nas actually said it out of his mouth that all this was over Carmen:
"You see a ? who know, out of three women 2 out of 3 will love you but lead you to they own, hidden evil ? ! You the reason ? be beefin, hoe get on 'Posed to be Earth, ain't worth the ? that you sit on" (The Cross)

    Earth = mother of a child...in 5% language.

Looking at it this way it makes more sense.

Jay-Z was the most popular rapper of the era. BIG was dead, Pac was dead, DMX was an ally, Scarface was an ally the only person in any position to challenge him was Nas and in his mind he had a trump card on him (? Carmen Nas' Baby Mama) so he figured it was an easy coup de grace.

It was a win-win situation for Jay. Either he disses Nas and he doesn't respond (win because he can say Nas was scared to take him on) and he's crowned king with little bloodshed or Nas responds and he bombs on him on a personal level (which is what it came down to) and he wins in a ? battle, either way he couldn't see himself losing.

Of course he ended up losing but as plans go, they often go awry at some point.
