January this year the U.S. Government destroyed Megaupload, but founder Kim Dotcom is a not done with the file-hosting business yet and is preparing to come back with a vengeance. The coding work for the new Megaupload is nearly finished, the servers have been ordered, and investors are lining up. A return of the file-hosting site appears to be looming. With 50 million visitors per day at its peak, Megaupload was one of the largest websites on the Internet.
This quickly changed January this year when the U.S. Government took down the file-hosting service and had several key employees arrested including founder Kim Dotcom.
Abruptly, the focus of Megaupload’s team shifted from serving customers to defending itself in a high-profile criminal prosecution. While the criminal case is moving ahead very slowly, Megaupload’s founder does have some progress to report on another front.
Dotcom previously announced that he planned to bring Megaupload back to life, and new information suggests that this may happen rather quickly. In an update this weekend he tweets that most of the work on the second incarnation of the site is already done.
“Quick update on the new Mega: Code 90% done. Servers on the way. Lawyers, partners and investors are ready,” Dotcom teases.
“Be patient it’s coming,” he adds.
From the brief progress update it’s clear that the site is on schedule for launch later this year. In addition, it’s interesting to note that despite the ongoing criminal case, partners and investors are happy to be involved.
In recent weeks Dotcom has delivered several hints about the new Megaupload, which he says will be bigger and better than the file-hosting service that was taken down.
“We are building a massive global network. All non-US hosters will be able to connect servers & bandwidth,” he explained earlier.
According to Dotcom we can expect a Megaupload with an even greater range of applications than just file-sharing. While developers of file managers are being encouraged to get in touch for early API access, Dotcom is also calling out to those involved in email and fax tools, VOIP and video apps.
It’s clear that Dotcom doesn’t have the slightest urge to throw in the towel.
“They abused the wrong guy. I am going to turn this world upside down. Power to the people. Bye bye Echelon. Hello Freedom,” Dotcom added.
It will be at least a few more weeks before the new Megaupload appears online, but there are exciting times ahead. MEGA exciting.

Man that was the best upload and download site. I had all my ? on there and was making some money too off that ? . They kept your stuff on there forever even if nobody downloads anything. Plus you didn't need a premium account to do all that.

would it be a crime if someone were to download material that is unreleased or completely obscure and unavailable to buy? I know someone that knows someone that knows someone that hears good music from time to time but cant ever find that music on itunes or in music stores or anywhere. How is said person supposed to obtain such music then?

We've sort of known that Kim Dotcom was launching Megabox from the remains of Megaupload but we didn't know exactly what it was. Now that Dotcom has leaked a video about the service, we have an idea: a music service that wants to destroy labels and put the artist in charge.
This ain't piracy. Megabox, which is supposed to launch later this year, is a music service that sounds like a lot of other music services but gives more money directly to the artist... or something like that. The idea is to give free music away and then compensate the artist with advertising revenue. TorrentFreak explains:This revenue comes from the Megakey application that users have to install. Megakey works like an ad blocker, but instead of blocking ads it replaces a small percentage with Mega's own ads. Those who prefer not to install the app have the option to buy the music instead.
Installing the Megakey app makes the music free, those who don't install the app, have to pay for the music. Most of the revenue will go to the artist and Megabox will only take a small share. Kim Dotcom this week provided "early-access users" a sneak peek at his new file-sharing service, Mega, which will open to the public tomorrow.
According to TechCrunch's Ingrid Lunden, who got a first look at Mega, the site resembles a simplified version of Dropbox, with a folder to hold files, plus an inbox and contacts tab. Those looking for more than 50GB of free storage will be able to select from three paid tiers — €9.99 ($13.29), €19.99 ($26.59), and €29.99 ($39.90) per month for the respective 500GB storage/1 terabyte bandwidth, 2GB/4TB, and 4GB/8TB.
Kim Dotcom tipped his new project in early November, and has been tweeting all week to get the word out and entice new users.
"24 hours until Mega!," Dotcom tweeted today. "One more day! Are you ready?" he wrote (to which one follower responded with lyrics from a Les Misérables song).
Dotcom has revealed that Mega will include 50GB of free storage for all users. Mobile storage app MediaFire launched the Android version of its app this week, and also offered 50GB of free storage, but other cloud services offer much less, including Dropbox (2GB), Google Drive (5GB), and Microsoft's SkyDrive (7GB).
"Mega will have very generous limits for free users," Dotcom tweeted Thursday.
The Mega website points to a host of new features that outshine the old, including easy privacy, an online Mega Manager, a live global cloud file system, and multi-centric data warehousing.
"Before, you had to install the Mega Manager on every computer you used Megaupload from," the site said. "Now, high-speed parallel batch uploading and downloading with resume capability are integral parts of the Mega website."
Dotcom is hoping to reward former Megaupload users by attempting to retrieve access to their saved files, as well as allow them to retain premium status on the new site. Both situations are being worked on, he said.
The entrepreneur spent much of 2012 avoiding the U.S. Justice Department after it shut down Megaupload and tried to have him extradited from New Zealand to America to face charges of massive copyright infringement. Dotcom denies any wrongdoing.
This week, an Ontario judge refused a U.S. request for access to the data on Megaupload servers hosted in Canada, as reported by Ars Technica. Canadian Justice Gladys Pardu said the servers are the equivalent to information on 100 laptop computers.
