He's in my top five (see avi). And since my top five is the only top five that matters to ME....? everybody else's...yes I agree.

He been killin ablums/mics consistenly for years, I say he's earned the right to be a little arrogant.

I'll have to think about this. I can say with confidence I'd place him in my to 5 albums wise but lyrically I'd have to think about his placement more.

Hell ? no and i ? with the Roots. Top 5 means you've shifted culture to me (Pac, Big, Jay, Nas, Cube, etc).

Black Thought is a very good mc, he is in the Common, AZ,etc type category to me but i wouldn't say they've shifted culture enough.

What does "shifting a culture" mean?

And if your talking "culture", Black has kept it 100% by rapping all over live production/instrumentals with every type of musical genre since he started . .

When i say shifting culture i mean brought hiphop to places it's never been (mainstream, other countries, other cultures, other genres). You go to countries in Africa, Europe, Caribbean, etc they know who Pac is and know his movement. People like Black Thought have never shifted culture like that to me.

It's like saying Lil Brother has had the same impact as Run Dmc.

Ok. You're speaking on 'impact' of an MC/rapper

I think Black in this case is basing his assumption on lyrical skill-set . .

I would need to see the context of the statement. To me lyrics alone doesn't make you a top 5 rapper, if that was the case people like Canibus, Chino XL,etc would be ranked high.

With my top 5 constantly changing based on my mood, i cant say he's always in it. But a rapper like black thought, if anyone says he's in theirs I cant be mad at that and i will have to give him a thumbs up for decision making.

Shifting the Culture??? ? do you mean "Commercial"?

The Roots impact is definitely widespread(he is the frontman), any Hip Hop band that came after them has tried to emulate their success and/or style, they released albums with critical acclaim and moderate commercial success, toured around the world non-stop for over a decade, are the house band for one of the highest rated late night TV shows, been in indie films.

People all over the world definitely know who Black Thought is.

All that said, he's almost too ill, sometimes his ? is structured too perfect, breath control too perfect, it can become monotone, but if he wants to give himself that top 5 MC nod, I can't argue against it, every Roots album is a classic.

Just to play devil's advocate, Biggie and 2pac only "shifted the culture" when they died. They were just regular popular rappers prior to that. Snoop shifted the culture as much if not more than them and you wouldn't put him in your top 5 would you? When 2pac alive he did not have people in Africa root for him, trust me i'm from Africa too. All that is something that came with the media's sensationalizing their deaths and them becoming martyrs or "dead heroes" like they always do.

I don't think i'd put Black Thought in a top 5, but if we're discussing pure skills and catalogue (with the Roots) he might be a contender.

No, KRS, Rakim, etc aren't commercial rappers but they've clearly shifted culture. Try again!

He could make that claim, he is not in my top 5, maybe top 15.

He is consistent I will give him that, and his subject matter is vast.

My argument against is; heads don't say, "Did you hear that new Roots album? Black Thought ripped it"

Maybe slept on and underrated but I would not put him in my top 5.
