Lol, yo this is bringing back so many memories. The first time I heard ether........I was hearing it with a friend, and none of us couldt believe what we heard. We were silent for like a good minute, just trying to catch our breathe. I can only imagine what it felt like for Jay-Z to hear it...especially since Nas dropped Ether on the day of his birthday....that's some cold ? right there -
Nas should've dropped a video for ether but I guess Ether was etherous enough.

Even though Nas destroyed Jay,.I still feel he should've finished him while his feelings were hurt. Post ether Nas kinda let Jay off the hook. That whole rant Nas threw was unnecessary given the whole rap world was his. He didn't need to diss ? after ether.

Man Jay on some ? . I kinda agreed at first that Takeover was more of a sporting kind of diss, but then I remembered that Jay's indirects and subliminals were disrespectful as ? ...something he left out in the interview.
One such instance:
Nas "How We Livin" (w/ AZ) I forget the year, I think 1996 or 1997--
"Is That yo ? in my 6/ turning up the volume when she hear my hits?"
About 2 years later (1998-1999) Jay-Z drops "Is That Yo ? "...

That's why Ether was so reckless. Before he bragged about ? Carmen to the world, he had already bragged about it on records. He said it himself it had been brewing for years before coming to a head. That ? wasn't a coincidence, I'm pretty sure nobody caught that in 2001-2002 but looking back on it, Jay deserved it.
If he was really sporting he could have kept it subliminal like it had been already and then he added the "you know who did you know what with you know who but let's keep that between me and you"...but the important part was the ad-libbed "for now" that ? served as a warning that he was going to talk about it if Nas responded anyway so he might as well go for the jugular and get it over with. He saw the whole Carmen scenario as an Ace-In-The-Hole that he could use if he needed to. -
Jay was the guy making fun of the special kid & Nas hit him with the ? strength surprised him.

Yeah Jay caught mad feelings after Ether and his argument about him dissing in a strictly competitive and sporting way was nonsense after Is That Yo ?
The Hot 97 poll was nonsense too cause if I'm not mistaken they made people vote Ether vs. Supa Ugly which was not representative they shouldve went with Takeover vs. Ether. Ether probably wouldve won in that poll too but who knows. -
I don't know. That was probably the best way to go. Takeover was a better song, but Supa Ugly was a more grimey diss. Anyway, I sure people that voted, didn't really vote so much on the songs but on who they think won the beef as a whole.
