it will be hard as hell to find a place like that in manhatten but you should try hell's kitchen for about 200-500 hundred more you can get a nice place you might get lucky there are many many apartments in the city in nice bulidings that rent for less than that you just have to be diligent in looking.
you can also find a much nicer place in the other parts of nyc but manhatten really is for people with money. -

No such concept exists when it comes to an under $2K apartment in MANHATTAN. Better take that ? to the Bronx.
And I've only been living in NY two years to know that one.
