I woke up early on my born day, I'm twenty years of blessing
The essence of adolescent leaves my body now I'm fresh in
My physical frame is celebrated cause I made it
One quarter through life some ? -ly like thing created
Got rhymes 365 days annual plus some
Load up the mic and bust one, cuss while I puffs from
my skull cause it's pain in my brain vein money maintain
Don't go against the grain simple and plain
When I was young at this I used to do my thing hard
Robbin foreigners take they wallets they jewels and rip they green cards
Dipped to the projects flashin my quick cash
and got my first piece of ass smokin blunts with hash
Now it's all about cash in abundance, ? I used to run with
is rich or doin years in the hundreds
I switched my motto instead of sayin ? tomorrow
That buck that bought a bottle could've struck the lotto
Once I stood on the block, loose cracks produce stacks
I cooked up and cut small pieces to get my loot back
Time is Illmatic keep static like wool fabric
Pack a four-matic that ? your whole cabbage

I was working late when it became midnight, so I couldn't post right away. But as soon I got home, I took out my head phones, and began blasting my favorite Illmatic remixes:

before hitting the sack, I'd like to take this moment to honor what is truly, without a doubt, one of hip-hop's best albums ....a timeless, splendid and beautiful work of music.... one that, I hope, will be remembered as the album that told the story of hip hop, and what hip hop was, and is, to heads like ourselves.
This album changed how we felt about the culture of hip hop, and the stories that it could tell about our lives.
In fact, it is one of the few rap albums out there, that can be legitimately ranked along with the most acclaimed music albums in history, spanning all genres and periods. Illmatic is nothing less, than hip hop's gift to the world :-) And I wanna thank Nas for giving us soooo much dopeness to look back upon...
Thank you Nas, for sharing your life with us. And thank you again, for helping the world see what the essence of hip hop, is all about.

This album seems to be a gift and a curse for nas. It's a gift for obvious reasons but a curse because everything he does since has been compared to it. Great albums have been labeled "wack or mediocre" cause it's not illmatic -

Excuse me but that GOAT button is here because of Pac. But imma leave that subject alone right now this thread is for Nas

Nas bars are so incredible sometimes that it's disgusting.. unfair to these other rap ? . Here we are 20 years into his career and he still is spitting the best bars out. His verses on Triple Beam Dreams, Rewind, Bravehearted, Stillmatic intro(couldn't even get to Ether, I was stuck on this..listened to it 20 times straight), Lil Waynes outro, The entire Life is Good album and countless other songs have kept hip hop alive..and the fact that he's a good person makes me root for him more. Salute the king.

I already got the 10th anniversary with On the Real on it

I'm thinkin bout coppin the 20th just to be part of history -
This album will always be the standard for lyrical hip hop
-
Crazy thing is nas was 20 when he dropped this album. Find me a rapper today his age dropping material like that
-
1994. 20 Years ago The Year my 2 favorite Emcees changed the course of Rap Music as we know it.
ILLmatic = Old Testament
Ready To Die = New Testament
What these two albums prove is that Hip Hop hasn't evolved as both of them are still ? on what's being released musically and lyrically. But I'm very proud and happy to be a lifelong NaS fan. It's crazy to look back at how this album just really overtook me as I was going from Middle School to High School. Crazy I had both "ILLmatic" and "Ready To Die" on cassette. Kids today probably wouldn't know what a tape was if they saw it, lol. But NaS survived the times Literally. The Skill and Knowledge he kicked will forever keep him in GOAT discussions. With that I leave you with probably one of my fav lyrics from the album:
"I Switched my motto/instead of saying f*ck tomorrow/that buck that brought a bottle could of struck the lotto" -
Life's A ? is my favorite rap song of all time.

Best album ever
&
Best rapper ever -

Nas wrote:Verse 1
Straight up ? is real and any day could be your last in the jungle
Get murdered on the humble, guns'll blast, ? tumble
The corners is the hot spot, full of mad criminals
Who don't care, guzzlin' beers, we all stare
At the out-of-towners they better break north
Before we get the four pounders, and take their face off
The streets is filled with undercovers, homicide chasin' brothers
The DA's on the roof, tryin' to, watch us and knock us
And killer coppers, even come through in helicopters
I drink a little vodka, spark a L and hold a glock for
The fronters, wannabe ill ? and spot runners
Thinkin' it can't happen 'til i, trap em and clap them
And leave em done, won't even run about gods
I don't believe in none of that ? , your facts are backwards
Nas is a rebel of the street corner
Pullin' a tec out the dresser, police got me under pressure
Verse 2
Yo, they call me Nas, I'm not your legal type of fella
Moet drinkin', Marijuana smokin' street dweller
Who's always on the corner, rollin' up blessed
When I dress, it's never nuttin' less than Guess
Cold be walkin' with a bop and my hat turned back
Love committin' sins and my friends sell ?
This ? raps with a razor, keep it under my tongue
The school drop-out, never liked the ? from day one
'Cause life ain't ? but stress fake ? and crab stunts
So I guzzle my Hennessy while pullin' on mad blunts
The brutalizer, crew de-sizer, accelerator
The type of ? who be ? ' in your elevator
Somehow the rap game reminds me of the ? game
Used to sport Bally's and Gazelle's with black frames
Now I'm into fat chains, sex and tecs
Fly new chicks and new kicks, Heine's and Beck's
Verse 3
No doubt, see my, stacks are fat, this is what it's about
Before the BDP conflict with MC Shan
Around the time when Shante dissed the real Roxane
I used to wake up every mornin', see my crew on the block
Every day's a different plan that had us runnin' from cops
If it wasn't hangin' out in front of ? spots
We was at the candy factory, breakin' the locks
Nowadays, I need the green in a flash just like the next man
? a yard ? , let me see a hundred grand
Could use a gun son, but ? bein' the wanted man
But if I hit rock bottom then I'm a be the son of Sam
Then call the crew to get live too
With swoop, Hakim, my brother jungle, big Bo, cooks up the blow
Mike'll chop it, mayo, you count the profit
My ? is on the streets, this way the Jakes'll never stop it
It's your brain on drugs, to all fly ? and thugs
Nuff respect to the projects, I'm ghost, one love
Represent is by far and away the most nihilistic rap song of all time. How can you look at the lyrics or listen to them performed and not understand the story?
You learn about the artist and his mindstate. He expresses his dislike for traditional institutions but also his love for fast money, criminality and materialism. It's the mind frame of a typical immature ghetto kid except writ more poetic than most 20 year olds can conceive.
Nas was a prodigy, in the very literal sense of the word.
