A Douglas County woman was arrested after authorities said she took her neighbor's puppy and beat it to death.

Monday evening Douglas County deputies responded to a theft call on Bright Star Road.

According to Douglas County Chief Deputy Stan Copeland, Ryeeah Christine Hatcher, 27, entered her neighbor's back yard, grabbed a puppy and stuffed it into a backpack.

Other neighbors saw Hatcher and chased her as she fled the neighbor's yard with the puppy.

Copeland said when residents had Hatcher cornered, she begin banging the backpack against a tree resulting in the puppy's death.

Deputies arrived and Hatcher put up a fight before being taken into custody.

Hatcher was charged with obstruction, felony cruelty to animals and theft by taking and granted a $12,000 bond.

Copeland said there is concern regarding the woman's mental stability and said his office will be notifying the districtattorney's office with their concerns.
