As Duke fan, I can tell you without a doubt he's the most dominant PG in Duke history (which includes the guy who has the most assists in NCAA history and 2 National Championships - Bobby Hurley and future #1 draft pick Kyrie Irving) Fun fact all of them are from New Jersey - Coach K loves New Jersey for some reason, in fact every single team that has won a National Championship at Duke had multiple starters from New Jersey.How good could jay have been in nba based off his college days?
Anyway he had the total package, he was ridiculously fast, could shoot and pass- but he was a bit of a score first guard, slightly turn-over prone and he bricked FTs like Shaq. He was part of that 2001 Duke squad that led the nation in scoring with 90+ points per game along with future NBA players Shane Battier, Carlos ? , Mike Dunleavy and Chris Duhon coming off the bench. That team still has the highest margin of victory out every current NCAA champion since 2000. He was an explosive transition athlete like DRose was at Memphis and John Wall was at Kentucky, dude was only 6-1 dunking on dudes in the paint. In fact at the NBA combine he was 1st in the lane agility drills and 3rd in the 3/4 court sprint. His athleticism, handles and ability to create one on one was the reason he was drafted #2 overall after Yao Ming. After that motorcycle accident he lost virtually all what made him such a highly regarded NBA prospect.
Honestly, even if he didn't get hurt, I don't think he would've been an elite NBA point guard because he relied all on his athleticism too much and was a horrible free-throw shooter. His pre-injury ceiling was similar to Ty Lawson's and his worst case scenario would have been a Will Bynum.
It's weird he helped Duke dominate and win a NCAA championship in 2001 and was the sole reason Duke lost in the 2002 NCAA tournament, dude had 4 turnovers, was 6 out of 19 from the field and lost the game by choking on the FT line. Bruh when out like a straight ? .
