I'm glad we all agree that Nelly dropped the greatest debut album ever witnessed. ? was just unforgettable; it caused pandemonium. Nelly came into the game and dropped a classic straight out the gate. He introduced his own sound, pioneered his own style and put his own city on the map. A city most people didn't give a ? about. No solo male rap artist had ever done numbers like that. There's only one rapper who's debut impact is even comparable to this, and that's 50's.
We still gotta remember a couple things, though: #1- Nelly was from ST Louis, while 50 was from NY, and everyone knows NY/LA rappers were getting a far bigger push back then; #2 - Nelly didn't have any big name features/producers like DRE, Eminem or Nate Dogg behind his ? ; #3 - Nelly didn't have a big back story like getting shot to help promote his ? . All he had was his own natural born talent. That's why Nelly wins this one. It was much harder for him. This is why he's one of the goats. All the talk about Illmatic being a game changer is laughable. No one outside of QB even heard that ? . That was some ? ? . Nelly is a true pioneer. Show some respect. If Nelly aint in your top 10 you need to just leave the country or something.
Country Grammar (RIAA):
Certified NINE TIMES PLATINUM in less than four years
Certified double platinum in six weeks
Currently standing at 8.5 million in the US (more than GRODT in the US)
Certified 7 times platinum just over a year after its release
One of the highest selling albums in rap history
#1 for 5 weeks

This album came out 3 years before GRODT and they're around the same number or albums sold...
-
Oh and
GRODT >>> Country Grammar
I like country grammar but GRODT had a bigger impact -
this and GROTD had the most effect on White america when it hit
-
T/S lost me when he brought up Illmatic.
Illmatic>>>>Country Grammar -
I think the difference between those 2 albums is that 50 had hype from way before his album dropped. Nelly's hype literally started with his first single. I still think 50 has the edge, thoughm as far as hype. He was everywhere..

Another nelly thread smh

I actually liked Country Grammar when it dropped but most of that album sounds kinda dated now TBH. I always liked Nelly but he fell off hard. He had a nice lil' run though spanning roughly from '00 to '05.

Nelly always had them hooks that just made you wanna scream the ? along no matter where you were
-
GRODT was not 50 cent's debut

Come to think of it that album did have bangers though, dated or not. Back then when it dropped they were hot. "Country Grammar", "E.I" were hot when they dropped. What I liked about them is you could play 'em in several environments. Like in the club, in your car, with your chick and even on your walkman (lol showing my age with this). Same thing with the sophomore album eventhough his debut was doper.
I think Nelly f*cked up when he took a break after Sweat/ Suit and think he could come back and still be relevant. When you have built a solid fanbase like emcees like Jay Z, Nas or Eminem have done you can do that, but if you're an artist that's as dope as your last hit and have a fanbase consisting of young schoolgirls and white kids you gotta keep putting material out.

? debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 chart, and sold 802,858 copies in its first week alone, which was the record for a debuting artist and the fastest-selling album ever until Eminem's The Marshall Mathers LP in 2000.
