That was my exact reaction also. Thats the diffeence in generations. New nggas feel that outside pressure and add caveats. Older generations just said it.

It's funny I heard the song yesterday and I was like "oh this is the part the ic was talkin bout" then he said just playing and honestly yeah I felt disappointed too like he was saying disregard all that

It was a weak diss. You shouldn't lump all of those talents, and lack of talents together. They are all distasteful for different reasons. The diss has a kernel of truth, but it's not well developed enough to stick. J. Cole doesn't have the character to stand for anything, so it's not surprising that he would run from his undercooked diss. What does he stand for again, apart from "artistic freedom", "not following trends". Those aren't things you take a firm stand on. Dude is talented, but there are certain gladiator sports he's not built for.

this is just another reason why he is mr. boring. he always plays the middle of the road. he has no real imaginiation. don't want to ruffle feathers. wants to be liked by everyone. doesn't want to let nas down. this leads to him saying something with some truth, then saying "nah just joking." someone who really captures ppl as an artist can't be trying to please other people and make everyone happy.
look at tupac he took on thug life with black panther passion gangster, and made it his own
lil wayne took on drug addict and ran with it
rick ross took on fake al pacino/scarface and ran with it
drake took on lame simp tricking on hoes and crying into phones at home while he ? and soft as a feather filled pillow on a cloud persona and ran with it

But now when I think about it, ? everybody he named (including Em, and I actually really liked SSLP, MMLP, The Eminem Show) so he should have had no problem with it if they considered it a diss. -
