Alligator shot, killed Monday identified as the one that killed Texas man

An 11-foot, 400-pound alligator shot and killed Monday has been identified as the one that killed an Orange man Friday at a Southeast Texas marina.

Tommie Woodward, 28, died in the attack early Friday morning, July 3, after jumping into Adams Bayou at Burkhart's Marina in Orange. Witnesses said Woodward was warned not to swim in the area and there are "No swimming, alligators" signs posted in the area.

According to KFDM, Capt. Rod Ousley of Texas Parks and Wildlife, a game warden called him late Monday afternoon to report someone had shot a large alligator in the head and brought it to Burkhart's Marina. The alligator measures 11-feet-2-inches long -- about the size of the alligator that killed Woodward.

Justice of the Peace Rodney Price of Orange County Precinct 4 said remains found inside the carcass were identified as Woodward's.

An autopsy determined Woodward died by drowning but he lost part of his left arm and sustained puncture wounds to his chest in the attack. The owner of the marina told KBMT Friday that Woodward frequently swam in the bayou. Woodward's body was found nearby about two hours after the attack.

Woodward's family sent his body back to the St. Louis, Missouri area -- where he was from -- for his funeral. KBMT reported.

Texas Parks and Wildlife Department officers had been searching for the alligator since the incident.

Parks and Wildlife had not authorized anyone to ? the alligator. Doing so without a permit is a Class A misdemeanor punishable by a fine of up to $500 in addition to civil restitution, Ousley said.

No word on whether any charges will be filed against the poacher.

RIP to this hero alligator. Induct him to the Trill Animal Hall of Fame.

The fact that he didn't ? around and let this CAC splash around in his hood ? nilly and killed his ass immediately is my favorite part of the story.

Gator was like "Oh... ? me?! Ok ? ..."

they ALWAYS do this. Animals get put down when they show violent tendencies to humans. Like theyre scared the animals got bloodlust or something. Its pretty messed up
