My personal opinion: If you do it right, it's pretty close to the same effectiveness as a condom. There's no form of contraceptive that's all the way effective.

Then your friends got the worst luck. An egg is only viable for a 24hr time span, which could occur at anytime during a five day stretch during ovulation. Granted females are more ? during ovulation and want to suck your sperm up their ? , but if you pay attention you can tell when's she ovulating and be on your pull out game that week.
