I'm listening to WDAS in Philadelphia. They just played Summertime. I'm listening to this song reminiscing and truth be told, Jazzy Jeff and Fresh Prince's first two albums were solid 4 mic efforts.
Girls Ain't Nothin But Trouble
Rock The House
The Magnificent Jazzy Jeff
A Touch of Jazz (Remix)
Parents Just Don't Understand
Brand New Funk
As We Go
Live @ Union Square
Summertime
^^^^ Those songs got played in the mix shows circa 87/88 right alongside Public Enemy, Eric B and Rakim, Big Daddy Kane, Boogie Down Productions, etc.
Jazzy Jeff and Fresh Prince won a Grammy in 1988. Their album was good but Eric B and Rakim, Public Enemy, EPMD's albums were better. Nevertheless, they won a Grammy the first year the Grammys had a category for rap.
Then Will Smith played on The Fresh Prince of Bel Air which was highly successful
In the late 90s Will Smith released a solo album Big Willie Style that sold 9X Platinum. These were the singles;
Men In Black
Just The Two Of Us
Getting Jiggy With It
Miami
Will Smith starred in a lot of movies but here's a lil known fact; At one point in time Men in Black and Independence Day were the #1 and #2 selling movies of all time. Then The Star Wars series and Harry Potter came out and outsold Men in Black and Independence Day. But at one point Will Smith starred in the #1 and #2 selling movies of all time.
So somebody name a rapper/MC more successful than Will Smith. I'll wait.

Give Shenco some time. All he needs is a Jazzy Jeff
-
Dr Dre....bank account
-
From hip-hop only, Jay-Z.
-
Define success.
-
The author of the blueprint
-
Mc hammer?

Commercially more towards TV & movies, it's Will. But there's at least a handful of rappers musically more successful than him (as far as sales and stature in the music business)...
Jay-Z
Eminem
Dr. Dre
Kanye West
There's might be more but that's who I can think of off the top. Will is a pioneer for commercial success as an MC off and on the mic no doubt. Plus, when he wanted to he could rap his ass off. Which makes his career very special and a real blueprint -
His ghostwriters.

Nobody has been more successful in hip hop than Jay-Z. When you add up the accomplishments culturally, artistically, commercially, and financially, Hov stands alone.

Name one more finer than Will Smith..... there are plenty.
To me a successful rapper has notoriety and sex appeal. -

I appreciate that brother Killa, but I'm just trying to create my own lane and keep the movement moving with some beautiful music. I wish blessings rain upon you and that your name be remembered for generations -

I think Will Smith's career is the definition of success. His first two albums were solid 4 mic albums that got played alongside Boogie Down Productions, NWA, Public Enemy, Big Daddy Kane, Eric B and Rakim and all of the hot MCs of that era. His first two albums alone puts him in the Hip Hop history books. Meaning, if he died after his first two albums and you had to write a history book on Hip Hop in 2015, DJ Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince would get a mention in the book.
Then in 1997 he released Big Willie Style that went 9X platinum.Dr.Dre and Jay-Z
Neither Dr Dre nor Jay Z have an album that sold 9X platinum
There's only a few rappers/MCs that can match the sales of Big Willie Style; Eminem, MC Hammer, Outkast, Biggie, 2Pac. But when you consider that Will Smith made a successful transition to Hollywood and starred in blockbuster movies its hard to think of a rapper that achieved that level of success.
Ice Cube has a successful career in Hollywood but he never sold 9X platinum and Will Smith starred in bigger movies. -
2 pac was on his way and he had nada before will smith did. but will smith got it on lock
