Alabama Demands Voter ID--Then Closes Driver's License Offices In Black Counties...

What happens when a state with a tough voter ID law suddenly makes it much harder for minorities to get driver's licenses? We are about to find out in Alabama.

Facing a budget crisis, Alabama has shuttered 31 driver's license offices, many of them in counties with a high proportion of black residents. Coming after the state recently put into effect a tougher voter ID law, the closures will cut off access -- particularly for minorities -- to one of the few types of IDs accepted.

According to a tally by AL.com columnist John Archibald, eight of the 10 Alabama counties with the highest percentage of non-white registered voters saw their driver's license offices closed.

"Every single county in which blacks make up more than 75 percent of registered voters will see their driver license office closed. Every one," Archibald wrote.

Archibald also noted that many of the counties where offices were closed also leaned Democrat.

"But maybe it's not racial at all, right? Maybe it's just political. And let's face it, it may not be either." he wrote. "But no matter the intent, the consequence is the same."

The voter ID law passed in 2011 -- which tightened previous ID requirements --includes driver's licenses on a very short list of government-issued photo IDs accepted in order to vote in the state. If a resident does not have the proper ID he or she must get two poll officials to vouch for his or her identity. Additionally, residents without photo ID can apply for a free state photo ID. The law was put into effect in 2014.

Before Alabama Gov. Robert Bentley (R) signed the voter ID legislation, the ACLU-Alabama said it would have "a disproportionate negative impact on minority voters," noting that 62 percent of black Alabama residents depend on public transport, compared to 34 percent of whites.

Challenges to voter ID laws are being litigated across the country, with a Texas case expected to end up in the Supreme Court. In that case, the appeals court ruled that the Texas law violated the Voting Rights Act because it had a discriminatory effect on minority voters.

A Department of Justice official explained in 2014 that the agency challenged the Texas law, but not the Alabama law, because at the time only Texas' law required some residents to drive hundreds of miles to attain the proper ID.

In 2013, the Supreme Court in a 5-4 decision gutted a key provision of the Voting Rights Act in Shelby County v. Holder, a case which originated in Alabama.

Voting is one of the ways to improve the Black community.

Picking representives at all levels, not just presidential, allows us to select people who can influence and create laws that can improve and protect Black interests.

This kind of thing was foregone once the Civil Rights voting act was gutted by the Supreme Court.

    Rights ? . Rights.
That's what being an American citizen is all about. The rights, to have access to resources. So by denying or messing around with Americans rights, is a violation of the constitution.

? a right to vote too......

To add... this is a direct correlation with Obama being in office.if u silly ? actually know anything about your history. Then u would know, during the reconstruction era, after slavery, blks were afforded full rights...

Many of the affluent blk towns, like blk wall street. were established during reconstruction.
Blks were making great strides establishing themselves, and because of their large population had great voting power.
Throughout the south, there were many blk governors, mayors, and other political officals. To combat blk progress, those crackas came up with ? prerequisites to target blk voters, such as, the guessing the amount of marbles in a jar , reading test etc... and around that same time, the ? was form to terroizine blks.

Fast foward to today. The Obamas are in Office, Eric Holder etc... ... we see the resurgence of wht supremacists sentiments in main stream america... blks are being lynched every week substituting bullets for ropes... AND we see these ? tricks to keep blks from having the ability to vote.

    Coincidence???

I'm convinced that a politician can't save you without money and agenda. If you don't have those 2 things, what's the point of voting.

I look at voting as a 8-arm octopus, it's tentacles long and far-reaching, with major implications for the black community. It's common knowledge that if you're not registered to vote then you can't serve on a jury (Reason why we get these all-white jury's rubber-stamping convictions for ninjas.)

Ferguson, Missouri is a case study for why voting is one of the most important civic duty's for black folks.

Not really surprising they scared of the changing demographics and numbers the most. Southeren states are turning purple/blue. If voting didnt matter they wouldnt go through so much passing unconstitutional laws and maneuvering to try to stop people from voting.

There are too many problems with the voting process in this country anyway. For those people speaking on the point of jury selection, keep in mind that a juror can be excluded for any reason, and that a person has a higher chance of being excluded if they know felons. Most people on this forum know a cousin, or pookie n em down the street that got a record.

Eh,, but I digress. I just want to make sure that people are aware about Electoral college, gerrymandering, as well as how candidates are pre-selected by the media.
