TBH if this wasn't Jay's 1st album it wouldn't be considered a classic album. Nothing groundbreaking. Kinda similar to every other NY rap album at the time..

But it's one of my personal favs n by far Jay's best effort to date..

This is how I know people talking ? when they diss, they act like nobody knew who Jay was or wasnt checkin for this album

    ?

I still feel lucky I was personally able to see Jay on tour for Reasonable Doubt that year. Kid Capri opened & closed for him.
I remember it wasnt even in a traditional music venue. It was in Ballroom to one of them Large hotels (Holiday Inn or Colony hotel?)

It was jammed packed. Jay came on stage wearing s simple Guess sweatshirt and jeans, but he tore it up.He even obliged the crowd at the end of his set when they kept yellin "freestyle!", so he came back to the mic and kicked one.
Even my boy who dont even like Jay enjoyed the show that night.

So when people say ? like no one was checkin for RD or Jay when it game out, I personally know that not to be true cause that show was packed with people like me and other real hip hop heads who knew this cat Jay was nice with the rhymes.

I was 6 years old when this album came out, so I honestly don't remember how popular he was BUT that's not the point. 20 years later, this album is considered a masterpiece has a huge impact NOW in 2016 and that's what matters and that's what a classic is. It stood the test of time so y'all can dead that "nobody cared when it dropped" ? . Y'all always say that nonsense. About as dumb as calling a album a classic a hour after it leaks

It went gold in 1996 so either people were checking for it, or Jay was buying his own ? . Plus he was on the Source 1996 year in review cover.

Reasonable Doubt will always be a mini OB4CL.

But @tompetrez3 Reasonable Doubt is better than Ironman but not Supreme Clientele.

Back then you could ship gold locally (the east coast) along with sparse sells outside the region..going gold wasn't ? 90s which is why rappers would get clowned if they couldn't do platinum..

Wrong going gold was considered an accomplishment, it wasn't until sometime later where the standard became platinum.

Isn't the purpose of a classic album that it stood the test of time and have legs.

By the way, RD went gold quicker than Illmatic did, but let some of ya'll tell it RD had no impact.
