Southern East Coast...
So let me guess I should throw random mid west/west coast ? just for the sake of it? -

Masta ace disposal arts

Never heard cold vein but I agree with everything else, throw in the realness too -
Its between Ja Rule and Jay Z. Ja Rule had the hits but Jay was a better rapper.
Having said that Nas was destroying mix tapes around that time. The Stillmatic freestyle was out and some of those joints from Lost Tapes were on mix tapes too. -

Why is there no Nas? It's a shame. That was Nas year no ? doubt.
Nas came out in December of 01 so I see why the OP left Nas out. Clearly Nas owned 2002 though with ether and the StillMatic album. Even though I picked other, it was definitely Jay that owned 2001.
Jay- 2001
Nas-2002
50- 2003

Jay ZJigga ran 01 Dynasty carried into 01 and mid year he started droppin cuts to Blueprint which rocked into the flowin year.
Ja had the radio - I'm real, rainy days etc -
Jay ZI was college as a freshman into a sophomore in 2001
Jay dominated the college market.... ? still went plat with 9/11 going down..... i remember the parties back then.....
That was Jay year -

Nas still ain't the MVP that year either. Em and Nelly had bigger years.

If it comes down to just sales alone then yea sure, just change the thread the title to "who sold the most", but Nas started off the year riding high from stillmatic and the victory over Jay, multiple classic guest appearances throughout the year, dropped another all time classic with Lost tapes and another borderline classic with Gods son, it was Nas' year you can argue Em but gtfoh with Nelly -

Well then they thread needs to be changed to "Who had the best Album", and since musical taste is subjective. When I hear MVP that includes everything, and Em and Nelly had a bigger year than Nas. As classic as Lost Tapes was that joint was named correctly, cuz that joint barely sold anything and ? Son didn't drop til 3 weeks before the year ended.
While Nelly dropped Nellyville and damn near every song he released was a hit from #1 in January of 02 to ? Juice in early 03. Then there's Marshall do I really need to type out his year. -

It's a collection of everything, Nelly had hits but didn't have a classic album, musically he just wasn't up to par with Nas or Em to be considered mvp -
Ja RuleSave that for 2002 fellas.

Jay Z01 - Jayz
02 - Em
03 - 50
04 - Outkast
05 - Kanye
06 - T.I
