Jay was not his comp at the time. Jay was a Nas Stan. He was sub dissing his true comp - Big on the East, Pac on the West. Letting them know on the first song. It was written will always be my favourite Nas album. Creative storytelling at its finest. You ? are stubborn as hell. Nas says, plainly, that it was a shot directed at everyone, and that it was inspired by Jay. So he clearly had Jay in mind when he thought of that line. What else do you want? Of course he wasn't savaging him at this point. But the point is that Jay was definitely on the radar. And like I said Jay traced the beef back to this initial line, which started as healthy competition.
