These two albums are my favourite of Common and IMO his best work...
Like Water For Chocolate (2000) was produced entirely by The UMMAH (Q-Tip, J DIlla and Ali Shaheed Muhammad) with help from ?uestlove of The Roots, bar one track 'The Sixth Sense' produced by DJ Premier... A very concious album with that neo-soul sound and very deep lyrics...
1. Time Travelin
2. Heat
3. Cold Blooded
4. Dooinit
5. The Light
6. Funky for You
7. The Questions ft Mos Def
8. Time Travelin Reprise
9. The 6th Sense
10. A film called ?
11. Nag Champa
12. Thelonius ft Slum Village
13. Payback is a Grandmother
14. Geto Heaven pt 2 ft DAngelo
15. A song for Assata ft Cee Lo
16. Pops Rap III
Be (2005) was produced mostly by Kanye West (when dude was on his soulful ? ) and Dilla... same subject matter with LWFC but shorter and more organic in sound... great album nontheless
1. Be
2. The Corner
3. Go
4. Faithful
5. Testify
6. Love Is
7. Chi City
8. The Food (live) ft Kanye

Like Water for ChocolateMan.... what this album did for me
Be on the other hand was one of the best production on an album I've heard from Kanye West ... if not the best -
Can't pick
-
BeI'm going with BE
-
Like Water for ChocolateLike Water for Chocolate is his Magnum Opus. I haven't listened to Be in awhile
-
BeBE is the Soundtrack to the Southside of Chicago. Period.
Anytime anyone ask me what the city like, whether it's really a war zone and all that I tell I don't know because MY Chicago was chronicled on BE. What it became after I left, what it was before I was born; I can't say. BE represents my 17 years in the Chi to a T. A verse from Lupe would have set it off but I digress. It didn't matter what I was doing in 2005, when I wanted to feel like I was home in that small barrack in Hawaii I played BE.
LWFC, is a DOPE album and might be his best work but it don't resonate with me like BE does.
They say you never truly appreciate ? til it's gone and that holds true for me with BE -
Like Water for ChocolateComo Agua Para Chocolate
-
Like Water for ChocolateI love BE but when I put it on now I only listen to the first 5 or 6 songs
-
BeAlso, ain't to many intros beating BE intro. ? set the stage for an amazing body of work
I wanna be as free as the spirits of those who left
I'm talkin' Malcolm, Coltrane, my man Yusef
Through death grew conception, new breath and resurrection
For moms, new steps in her direction, in the right way
Told inside is where the fight lay
And everything a ? do may not be what he might say
Chicago nights stay, stay on the mind
But I write many lives and lay on these lines
Wave the signs of the times
Many say the grind's on the mind
Shorties blunted-eyed and everyone wonderin' where I'm
Bush pushing lies, killers immortalized
We got arms but won't reach for the skies
Waiting for the Lord to rise
I look into my daughter's eyes
And realize I'ma learn through her
The Messiah, might even return through her
If I'ma do it, I gotta change the world through her
Furs and a Benz, Gramps wantin 'em
Demons and old friends, Pops they hauntin' him
The chosen one from the land of the frozen sun
When ? nights get remembered more than sober ones
Walk like warriors, we were never told to run
Explored the world to return to where my soul begun
Never looking back or too far in front of me
The present is a gift, and I just wanna be
Lyrical MASTERPIECE -
BeHis two best albums. I'm going with BE by a cat whisker

Like Water for ChocolateBE IS A GOOD ALBUM THAT IS QUITE OVERRATED...
I GET THAT IT WAS AN INTRODUCTION TO COMMON FOR SOME...
BUT INCOMPARISON TO LWFC, IT WAS TOO TAME, LACKED SODIUM, AND NEVER REALLY PEAKS...
HE COULD'VE DONE THAT ALBUM BLINDFOLDED...
I'D RANK ONE DAY, LWFC, RESURRECTION OVER BE (IN THAT ORDER)...
LWFC IS ONE OF COMMON FINEST MOMENTS...
MUSICALLY & LYRICALLY... -
Be"Be" has incredible production and dope song formats, but I consider this album better because it has some of the best verses Common has ever written. The intro is one of the best in hip hop; the first verse of "Faithful" is classic, arguably top 5 Common verse; and the last verse of "It's Your World" is godly.
-
Like Water for ChocolateThis ? was a classic album imo 10/10

Yes 'One Day it'll all make sense' is his best album to me too. The song with Lauryn Hill, G.O.D with Cello Green rapping was amazing. The 3 part Stolen Moment with a completely different song in the middle was genius. Make a name for ourself with Canibus was incredible. The production alone is mind blowing. No Id and this album is the architect of the Soul sound in rap. -
its like picking between two of your kids one is a little more introverted but you love the way their intelligence permeates and the soulfulness they exude (LWFC) the other kid isn't as deep and more social but they still got a light that draws you to the outer and inner beauty (Be)
i aint picking bruh -
I always liked this remix of The Corner with Scarface and Mos Def
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dU93b4McfKo
But truth be told, I've never heard Like Water For Chocolate in its entirety so I can't vote -
Like Water for ChocolateMy favorite Common album. Was on another level of greatness when I first heard it.
-
BeI bought water for chocolate and don't remember it much...so ima go with the classic BE, just off the intro alone
-
Like Water for ChocolateEveryone calls Be the classic, but I always preferred Like Water For Chocolate.
-
BeI can't be mad at anyone who chooses Like Water. That was arguably the beginning of the Soulquarian movement which was quite revolutionary.
-
BeBe by just a hair.
-
Like Water for ChocolateTough choice but Com + Dilla, Roots, QTip, D'Angelo FTW...

With Femi Kuti... the heir to the late great Fela -
BeBoth albums are the ? , but since I bought Be the day it dropped that will be the tie breaker.
