Only because Big L got killed

Big L would've been huge if he didn't get popped

Big L was never and would of never been on Nas level lyrically

You stupid as ? . L was rapping circles around EVERYBODY in NY except maybe AZ. Listen to the track with him and the reason ? Jay-Z. L ate Jay-Z on wax. If L never would've got killed he coulda took the NY crown because Nas wasn't even in the running when big died.

L was nice but ? outta here with that, compare L's first two albums two Nas' first 2 albums there not even close, and Jay was on that Fu Schnicken rap phase when L ate him, not relevant

Not the article itself...Just the fact that every other week there's a "Hey, look, Nas is winning!" thread....To counteract his ongoing losses...

I'm inclined to agree with the point, but the premise of the argument and how the author got there was homerrific. He basically outlines criteria that Nas fits into and others don't and uses that for reasons why Nas is the greatest lyricist.

It wasn't a well-backed article at all. The arguments aren't developed to assess a definition of lyricist, and isn't presented with evidence that isn't subjective to others or subjective to his own opinions. This should've been a blog post or something you'd read on Complex.

I think the author tried to write something you'd read in The Atlantic or The New Yorker, but instead ended up writing something you'd read on NasStan.blogspot.com (i just made this up...dunno if it exists or not).

I mean, he actually uses the point that Nas hasn't had a platinum-selling single to lay credence to Nas being better lyrically than someone who can put out a platinum-selling single. To me, that's where everyone should just hit the X on their browser. Like, really? He's the best lyricist b/c his albums have gone platinum but not the singles? To me that doesn't prove that Nas' fans want to buy his albums to listen to everything he says (technically, that logic applies to anyone who sells more albums than any given single). To me, it signifies that Nas is one of the most underachieving mainstream artists when it comes to putting out hit singles. He just can't do it. He doesn't have the IT factor to sell a single song. What he does have, is a dedicated fanbase.

But the author wants to use this logic to prove that his lack of sales somehow accentuate his lyrical ability.

To me, this article is nothing but a fluff piece. Dunno it it's to promote Nas for something. But I suspect it's more a case of CNN's web editor telling this guy to write something about hip hop that will get people talking, and the author being a Nas fan decided to write this opportunity to pay tribute to his favourite artist. Nothing wrong it, i suppose, but the basis of his argument's are flimsy and shouldn't be used as reason to agree with him, or his point.

2Pac is one of the greatest song writers, not lyricist
