As a lifelong hov fan to this day it ain't hard for me to admit that he def took a loss when ether dropped. ? can be delusional but if you were around back then you can't deny that ether was like dropping a nuke on the roc hq.

I would even say nas was asleep or anything, he just caught some bad luck with having a great album( OG I am) being leaked which caused him to cut down a album(which still was good imo) and rush record the other. he always had it. jay just didnt know that and ended up getting lit up lol

I remember when I first heard Ether. I was in high school doing my homework and only half listening to the radio. I missed the whole "? jay-z" part at first and was just like , "wow Nas sounds really angry, i wonder who he's talking about let me listen in". Then he just goes in on verse 2 " heard it when I was sleep
That this ? -Z and Cockafella Records wanted beef". At this point I was like "Oh ? is he talking about Jay-z?" I was in disbelief especially since Jay had been on fire for a few years by the time Ether dropped and I couldn't imagine anyone coming at him so direct and blatantly. I needed more proof cuz i knew of a JD, AZ and of course Jay-Z. ? -z coulda been just another rapper (lol not really). Then he continues with "First, Biggie's ya man, then you got the nerve to say that you better than Big
? sucking lips, why not you let the late, great veteran live"
By then I knew. The song had my complete attention. I was in awe and the 3rd verse was so personal and directly aimed at Jay, it was like a father brutally beating his child in front of the class for acting up in school. I knew that day, things would never be the same. Not just for Nas and Jay, but for any of us. That was the day Ether was born.
Since then Jay has had several beefs, but to me, no of them ever mattered because no one could do or out do what Nas had done. Nas cemented his place in hip hop with Illmatic and claimed his spot among the top of Rap's greatest with Stillmatic. I mean after hearing Ether and having it backed up with a great album, "How could Nas be Garbage". He put the semi auto Jigga's cartilage and got him up outta the throne. -
Told it before, we was having a serious Madden tournament going down....4 ps2's going at the same time. My cousin comes in the door like somebody was chasing him...lol...? must've sprinted up the three flights of stairs, and was like "Yo, turn on Hot 97 they playing that Nas response to Jay"....Good times yo....

I remember being at home during this time & my neighbor (this dude my sister use to talk to) was teaching me how to drive. I jumped in the jeep & he put a mix CD in (this is when ? had mad mix cds). He said "you heard this Lil T?". All of a sudden it said "? Jay-Z". At first it didn't click until I got to half way to the first verse & I was like "Damnnnnnn!!! He ripping him". After, it was over I said again "Damnnnnnnnnnnn!!!!!!". I never listened to a Nas album before that but I did have Stillmatic on bootleg (because of the Ether hype) & use to bump it. Especially the flyest gangsters song. But I remember that day like it was yesterday
