The World Boxing Association Championships Committee ordered the teams behind Anthony Joshua, who is the current WBA heavyweight champion, and Cuban puncher Luis Ortiz, who holds the number one in the ranking at the heavyweight limit, to start negotiations for a mandatory fight between them.
According to the resolution sent on January 11th, 2017, to both parties, it was reported that the winner of the Joshua's fight with Wladimir Klitschko, held on April 29th, 2017, had to face Ortiz after 120 days. 95 days have passed and, for this reason, the Championships Committee ordered to negotiate a fight between the British and Cuban boxers.
Both parties were duly notified that, as of August 3rd, they have 30 days to reach an agreement or the fight will be called to purse bids.
Joshua was initially being booked to have a rematch with Klitschko for a date in November, but those plans fell through when Klitschko announced his retirement from the sport earlier today.
There is another mandatory defense owed by Joshua, as part of his obligation to the IBF, to Kubrat Pulev of Bulgaria. Joshua's promoter Eddie Hearn is already making the rounds, stating that Pulev is the likely next opponent for a late October, November date in Cardiff.
But Ortiz and his handlers are claiming that a deal is in place between the sanctioning bodies, where their mandatory under the WBA is due to take place before the mandatory owed to the IBF.
There could be a legal battle, brought in by Ortiz's handlers, if he is skipped over in favor of Pulev. -

Vasyl Lomachenko (8-1, 6 KOs) takes another step in his evolution Saturday night in downtown Los Angeles when he defends his WBO 130-pound title against Colombia's Miguel Marriaga (25-2, 21 KOs) on ESPN. A large U.S. audience will be able to see the fighter with a talent compared to Muhammad Ali by Bob Arum, who promoted both fighters.
Lomachenko turned pro in 2013, and his career has built steadily on his peerless amateur success. While he captured the boxing world's imagination with his devastating performance in Beijing in 2008, Lomachenko says he grew tired of waiting around for four years by the time he finally got to London and "took my second gold medal."
Along with his relocation to the U.S., Lomachenko had to adjust his fight preparations to the demands of the pro game. After spending years training to fight several opponents in a two-week tournament, he now fights only three or four times a year.
"When I was an amateur boxer, you (might not) know your next opponent," he said. "You have to be ready for anything. That was much more difficult. Now I can know all about my opponent. I study everything he can do."
And his California training camp provides Lomachenko with everything he needs to dominate.
His father, Anatoly, supervises his preparations with a team of coaches and trainers. His diet is strictly monitored through pre-prepared meals, although he still fires up his barbecue for steaks on his days off. His coaches also engage him in brain-teasing mental puzzles designed to force him to think critically outside the ring.
Lomachenko shrugs off the idea that he took a bout with Marriaga only after the world's top fighters around his weight class declined to take him on despite the financial might of his promoter, Top Rank. Cuba's Guillermo Rigondeaux, another two-time Olympic gold medalist, is among the few big-name fighters daring to call him out.
But Lomachenko responds to the 36-year-old Rigondeaux with a wit that reflects his growing fluency in English:
"I don't think that fight is going to bring me a lot of glory, because after that fight, everybody is going to be saying I beat an old, little guy." -
Klitchko retired

Juan Manuel Marquez To Retire From Boxing, Won't Return
http://www.boxingscene.com/juan-manuel-marquez-retire-boxing--119152
By Miguel Rivera
On a day when former heavyweight king Wladimir Klitschko announced his retirement from the sport, another legendary fighter is going to walk away from the ring.
According to ESPN Deportes, former four division world champion, Juan Manuel Marquez, one of the greatest Mexican boxers of all time, is going to announce his retirement from professional boxing at the age of 43 years and 11 months.
Marquez is ending a career that began on May 29, 1993, and in a few more years he will find himself in the International Boxing Hall of Fame.
Marquez saw action for the last time in May of 2014, when he won a twelve round unanimous decision over former world champion Mike Alvarado in an HBO televised main event from Los Angeles, California.
Since that bout, he was plagued with a lingering knee issue that took two years to fully recover from.
He began training earlier this year for a planned ring return, but suffered a shoulder injury. Several other planned return were postponed for a variety of reasons.
The crowning jewel of his career was the fourth meeting with career rival Manny Pacquiao in the fall of 2012 - which saw Marquez close the book on their series of bouts by landing the perfect sixth round counter to knock Pacquiao out cold. He was offered a fortune to engage Pacquiao in a fifth contest - but rejected every advance. Their first bout in 2004 ended in a draw, with controversial decision wins by Pacquiao in 2008 and 2011.
His career was crafted by Hall of Fame trainer Ignacio "Nacho" Beristáin. He fought only 10 times on Mexican soil, 53 times in the United States and once in Indonesia. He was world featherweight champion, with further titles won at super featherweight, lightweight and super lightweight. He had 18 title fights.
Among his key career opponents were Pacquiao, Manuel Medina, Orlando Salido, Chris John, Marco Antonio Barrera, Joel Casamayor, Juan Diaz, Floyd Mayweather and Timothy Bradley.
Marquez will leave the sport with a magnificent career and a professional record of 56 wins, 40 of them via knockouts, with seven defeats and a draw.
