Project Spark Enters Open Beta on Xbox One
Ahead of full release later this year.
by Luke Karmali MARCH 4, 2014

Project Spark is now in open beta on Xbox One, Microsoft has announced.

Though slightly later than promised, the beta is now available on console having first appear on Windows 8.1 devices back in December. Anyone who participated in the PC beta should have automatic access to the Xbox One version, though anyone can sign up and get a key: https://joinprojectspark.com/

Cross-platform support and Cloud Saves mean that you'll be able to create something on a Windows 8.1 device then test it out on Xbox One and vice versa.

The game is expected to be released later this year. The good news is that Team Dakota has previously confirmed you won't need an Xbox Live Gold subscription in order to play the ambitious game-creation software when it's finally available to all.

Gotta find time for this in between Garden Warfare and Titanfall.

"The March update that delivers Twitch will also bring back toasts to the Xbox, the little notification pop-ups that appear on the screen. Gibson said Twitch will have its own toasts, alerting you when a friend starts broadcasting. These pop-ups, which can be disabled, won't appear on live broadcasts for others to see. Microsoft clarified that while Twitch pop-up notifications (or toasts) are coming to Xbox One with the March 11 update, friend toasts won't be coming until the following update, which could arrive as early as April. The developers of Alan Wake and the upcoming Quantum Break now have an Oscar in their midst, further raising their new game's profile in Microsoft's big multimedia push on Xbox One. The third-person shooter, in which unforeseen anomalies fling bits of the world forward in time, will have a companion television show and visual effects work from some of the recognized talent behind Alfonso Cuarón's boundless space film, Gravity.

In a note on the official Remedy Games website, the staff congratulates Greg Louden for his work at London-based effects studio Framestore, which won an Academy Award last week for Best Visual Effects. According to Louden's resume, he oversaw shots of Gravity's computer-generated interiors, with a focus on the free-floating objects that surrounded Sandra Bullock's stranded character. The film was entirely pre-visualized and extensively animated, making it an even greater achievement in visual effects than it might first appear. Gravity was also given gongs for its director, cinematography, editing, musical score, sound mixing, sound editing.

At Remedy, Louden is working not only on visual effects for Quantum Break, but on scripting and designing events as part of level design. The environment for visual effects is arguably more challenging in games, which are expected to display high-quality graphics in real-time and in a way that responds well to the player. And even with top-notch effects, the approval of players may still be harder to earn than an Academy Award.

April OS Update: Xbox One Keeps Getting Better with the Help of Our Fans
By Major Nelson posted March 18, 2014 at 6:00 AM

We announced last month that we’ve invited select Xbox Live members to preview system updates early. The engagement from the community has been incredible and we’ve gotten valuable feedback and bugs that have helped inform our feature improvements and quality before we rolled out the system update to the broader community. Thank you to those who shared their thoughts and let us know what they loved and what wasn’t working so well.

We will continue to push new features and other updates to these folks to explore and we’ll be trying new things with the UI, like notifications, different ways of discoverability, and a bunch of other ideas the team is working on. Through this process, some features will launch, others might not and all will be refined through feedback. We value your feedback and want your help shaping the future of Xbox One.

Today we’re excited to share the next wave of features that we will begin to roll out. These features will become available to members getting the early previews in the coming days and weeks and will be available to the full Xbox Live community in April.

    - Game and app saves and updates. A game save progress bar will show you the status of your game saves. You will also be able to easily tell what games and apps are being updated or have been updated recently.

    - Friends improvements. Notifications will be added to see when favorites and friends sign in to Xbox Live. This actually was one of the most frequently requested features from the first preview wave and we made it a priority to include it in the April update. Also, friends who are in multiplayer will be identified in the friends list. We’ll also add the ability to view friends’ most popular apps.

    - Kinect voice and motion improvements will continue to fine tune the quality and reliability of Xbox One commands.

    - Improved GameDVR video quality through compression algorithm improvements.

We’re also extending more invitations to Xbox Live members around the world in our current 13 Xbox One markets. New invitees will be sent an Xbox Live message to register. Once registered, you will be able to test the early features included in the update and provide feedback on a private forum.

We value all of the feedback we are getting from you. We know external hard drive storage is still a big one and we’ve promised before it’s on our list – I assure you that it still is. We’ll continue regular updates to Xbox One. Thanks for your support.
