The official numbers and his first #1

    http://www.thisis50.com/profiles/blogs/drake-s-one-dance-becomes-his-1st-no-1-single-as-a-lead-artist-on

His "Views" album moved an impressive 1.04 million equivalent album units for the week ending May 5. The number for traditional sales came in at 852,000, which will be good enough to overtake Beyonce's "Lemonade" disc for number one on the Billboard 200 chart.

^^^ with streams he did 1.04 million and without streams he did 852k - absolutely amazing :+1:

    proud of him

Drake has 20 Songs currently on the Hot 100 right now.... Almost his entire Album.

Wow. This is called ? .

Drake, Future, and Kendrick are at the top of the hip hop mountain and truthfully, Drake is leading the pack.

That's ironic LOLOLOLOL on here ? say he's a "popstar" but this is his first ever time getting a #1 as a lead artist on the Billboard pop charts. 50 Cent, Jay-Z, Eminem, Fetty Wap, Bobby Shmurda, Kanye West ? even Desiigner has one. Just an interesting observation. They're bigger "pop artists" than Drake is LOLOL.

Once again, you dont know ?

Jay-Z's first #1 was Empire State of Mind. So that is hardly a barometer of fame.

Having the actual literal #1 for a rapper is always gon be tough and having the actual literal #1 is often a technicality when a rapper could have dozens of top 10s.

They changed the format because streaming is the most common form of consumption for music. It also makes it easier for lesser known artists to profit from their music - it just so happens that major artists can win off this too. It was like this for singles when they used to be sold on cassettes before they changed it to "shipped" gold whenever you got a certified plaque.

With all due respect I don't see how what he did is a cheat code considering 50 Cent, Eminem, Lil Wayne have sold (or leaked) this in the past. He delayed the physical release of his album for a week and gave the music away digitally (most of us got it for free) and still did 852k without another major single in 2016 for 5 months - Hotline Bling came out a year ago.... Jay using Samsung makes his numbers appear as big as possible because they bought a million copies in one day, with Drake he didn't even get Apple to buy any copies. No diss here but some of y'all going overboard with the hate... They didn't even add the streams yet so he prolly did an additional 800k on top of what he sold physically.

I have no issue with streaming being included but valued as a lesser number. But counting 12 singles as an album is cheating. If your single goes plat then you get an award for having a hot song. You shouldn't be getting album awards if just single songs are selling 12 times or however many times that the album length is. If you truly have a gold album it will be streamed (fully) or purchased fully to the level that gets the gold plat or diamond certification.

Fixed cole made more money than all them ? combined from that billboard chart and was the only ? to do a tour performing his full album front to back. Sales, quality, and a message when it comes to cole. Future ain't even headlined a solo arena tour.

I don't get why people are complaining about streams and single sales counting towards plaques for albums.

    1. It doesn't affect you in any way.
    2. Plaques are just a way for artists to self-congratulate and for labels to have some sort of "trophy" to give to artists.

Unless you put out albums in the 80's 90's or 00's you shouldn't be THAT mad

Didn't even need to look at numbers but you could probably point at a few mainstream artist with super inflated views that sold less than ? who don't have no where near as much but fans actually brought the album

Question.. Can we call Drake a Hip Hop Artist?... He's more of a pop star that raps if u ask me. One Dance is damn near a dance hall record... And I say damn near because I don't want to offend the true dance hall folks out there.. I know the difference.
