A black Cornell student said he was beaten and called the n-word, roiling the Ivy League campus
Fraternity Psi Upsilon is shutting down its chapter at Cornell University after an alleged assault that authorities said is being investigated as a possible hate crime.
Following an incident, apparently involving members of Psi Upsilon, in which a white student allegedly attacked a black one, Cornell President Martha Pollack said this week that pending an investigation, the university would not reinstate the fraternity. Cornell had revoked the fraternity’s recognition last year for violating its code of conduct, according to the Associated Press.
“I will not tell you ‘this is not who we are,’ as the events of the past few weeks belie that. But it is absolutely not who we want to be,” Pollack said in a statement.
The school’s president said Sunday that its leaders are working to “develop and implement steps to be a more equitable, inclusive and welcoming university.”

Cornell University Black Student Group Complains of Too Many African, Caribbean Students
In a lengthy letter to Cornell University President Martha Pollack last week, members of student group Black Students United hand-delivered a list of demands calling on the school to address recent incidents of campus racism and a culture of white supremacy.
After slamming the Ivy League university for its shortcomings on diversity and inclusion, however, students complained, in so many words, about the disproportionate number of African and Caribbean students on campus compared to African-American ones.
Their demand? That university admissions devise a plan to actively increase the presence of underrepresented Black students on campus, who they define as those who have more than two generations in the U.S.
“The Black student population at Cornell disproportionately represents international or first-generation African or Caribbean students,” BSU wrote. “While these students have a right to flourish at Cornell, there is a lack of investment in Black students whose families were affected directly by the African holocaust in America.”
“Cornell must actively work to support students whose families have been impacted for generations by white supremacy and American fascism,” they added.

West Campus Residents ‘Stunned’ by Use of N-Word at House Dinner
ollowing two high-profile incidents in which Cornell students reported being targeted physically or verbally because of their race, the use of a slur last week at a house dinner has left a West Campus house community “shattered.”
Students at the Carl Becker House’s weekly house dinner on Wednesday night were answering poll questions by anonymously texting responses to questions such as, “What is your favorite place on campus?” Their answers appeared in bubbles on a projector, and soon people began submitting silly and somewhat inappropriate answers, people who were there said.
Then, in response to one prompt — “Name your key strength” — someone responded by submitting the N-word, which appeared prominently at the front of the room, projected onto a screen.
“The room went completely silent,” Prof. Neema Kudva, the house professor and dean, said in an email to residents of the house the next day, adding that “a sense of shock at the intent to violate and intimidate slammed into us.”
Prof. Thomas Fox, biology, who attended the dinner, said he has been a member of the house since 2005 and has never heard the room get so quiet.
“I have never, ever heard it that silent there,” he said. “There was dead silence for five minutes. People were stunned. There were some students at my table who were literally in tears.”

Not sure if they looking at nationality when they look through application. if African got a overall better gpa and credential than the black American, why should African be turn away?

Team black student's union! It's way past time for us to become exclusive vs inclusive. We should focus on self preservation. We are not in this together. Other cultures are using us as stepping stones.

Given the fact that many African immigrants and Caribbean immigrants look down upon black people, i don't have a problem with this.
But then again i do.
It's bad form. We look even more divided and publicly expose faults to be exploited by enemies and opportunists.
Due to the short sightedness of this particular demand i believe it was engineered by a black female. -

I never said they were lucky. But they were not victims of Slavery, Jim Crow, The ? Epidemic, The consequent War on drugs, or any other American issues. These systems that exist, like Affirmative Action, are meant to correct American problems.
A lot of the lack of Black success in the US is a consequence of deliberate sabotage from White Americans. Creating policies meant to help Black Americans, and letting these resources go to international students, is just another way White Americans are impeding the growth of a stable Black American middle class. -

Not American slavery on American soil where families were torn apart and people were robbed of their cultural identity, familial ties, language, and everything else they and their ancestors had ever known for centuries. Don't even try to play this "oh me too" game when you know damn well the differences are there and are clear as day.
My family is from the Caribbean but that doesn't mean I can't recognize that these social safety nets are being perverted. -
