parenthesis first
48/2(12) =
multiplication and division are interchangeable, would you read a sentence right to left? Why do you think they teach pemdas here and bedmas another place? Because they are the same ? thing
the 12 is by itself in parenthesis so why the ? would you multiply that first. You divide. If there is multiplication and division while completing a problem using pemdas you figure it out right to left
48/2 equals 24
24 times 12 is 288 -

true geeks get this one... man this thread is funny as hell, I'm missing diaz vs. daily for this. -
Johnny Green VI wrote: »You divide here first, bruh.
no my ? .why are u multiplying before you are dividing??
That is exactly why you are getting it wrong.
You solve from left to right.
no my ?

I always hated math, spelling ftw

this thread reminds me of that .999... = 1 thread. The only way to know the best solution to this is to know what the problem really is.
-
Nobody uses Pemdas anymore, it's been replaced by Bedmas.
Your method of math is obsolete.Johnny Green VI wrote: »I ain't never heard of that PEMDAS ? until this thread.
This.............. -
Never heard of Bedmas till this thread in terms of arithmetic. For algebra, well, yeah.

Some of yall ? really need not Excuse Aunt Sallie... Mae. paying her all this money and can't do basic math

No it isnt! Its 2. I even did on my calc!
48/2(9+3)
2(9+3)
48/24
2
i have always found math difficult until it dawned on me that it's all about following rules. math is the universal language. master the numbers and you shall master the world. -
oh ? i see how you guys got 288! this ? is crazy this problem is inherently evil and violates the laws the universe!!!!!
-
lmao smh did people really forget that u have to do the parenthesis first?...problem isn't difficult at all
-
whoever said two is right here it is broken down
48/2(9+3)
48/2*12
48/24
2
its that simple.
Exactly how I did it -

I prove my statement with links, and thats it! -
Please Excuse My dear Aunt Sally?

A physics major on another forum is going ballistic over people saying it's 2.

link please
lol
this shud be funny
For real tho, the problem seems to be those who are gettin 2, are multiplying what is outside the brackets, with what is inside prior to dividing, despite the fact that you multiply/divide from left to right. Once you have simplified what is in the brackets to the point where you can simplify no more, that phase is done, you move on.theRussian wrote: »It's not.
PEDMAS is completely ? and doesn't understand that Division and Multiplication has the exactly same order of operation priority, therefore whatever one comes first is the one that takes priority.
It's 288, this is not up for discussion. We are not reinventing the ? damn writing styles of basic math.
ORDER OF PRIORITY:
Parentheses
Exponents
Division == Multiplication
Summation == Subtraction
If you see any of the ones that equal each other next to each other, you do the one left-most first, and then the next. Again, this is not up for discussion. Thread over.theRussian wrote: »What? Who told you to distribute first? Distribution is just another word for Multiplication. You don't have to get rid of parenthesis, you have to perform the action within them first, the 2(12) is just another way of saying 2*12. And when you have 48/2*12, you divide first, and then multiply.
My so called intelligence has nothing to do with my arguments, the **** I do now wouldn't help me with basic addition even if I actually enjoyed plugging numbers in. We make sure we make our notation clear, but just because this isn't clear doesn't change the fact that there is only one solution.
Let's not forget, that the TI-82 and TI-83 both agree with the answer of 288 because it's order of operations is programmed in.
48/2X is different from 48/(2X) 48/2X still means 48/2*X.
I can't believe this is gone on for as long as it has. This is embarrassing, and extremely frustrating.

I'd say 288 but I havnt practised math properly in years.

48÷2(9+3) = 288
When using P.E.M.D.A.S. its:
Innermost Parenthesis
Exponents
Multiplication and Division from left to right
Addition and Subtraction from left to right
Multiplication and division are equal on the order of operations level; whichever one is first going left to right, you do first.
The same thing goes for addition and subtraction. -

The same thing goes for addition and subtraction.
But in this case multiplication is a parenthetical operation and supersedes the division operation.
Seems that people are only doing part of the parentheses step.
If is was 48 ÷ 2 * (9+3) 288ers would be correct.
But as long as parentheses are present they must be accounted for completely before anything else takes place. -
I think it comes out to this statement: Multiplication and Division -- Simplify multiplication and division in the order they appear
from left to right
And thats after you solve inside the parenthesis
