I'm still not understanding how you all are coming to the conclusion that NYC has a lesser impact. NYC is the cultural mecca center. When the rest of the country was backwards, NYC moved forwards. New York had the Harlem Renaissance, the Nation of Islam, and hip hop. They set the trends before the rest of the country followed suit.

The same Nation of Islam that got jealous of Malcolm X and murdered him in cold blood?

lol that's moving foward to you? Black on black violence. Blacks being jealous of other blacks?

Malcolm said it himself that he didn't think that the Nation was after him alone. He speculated that the FBI or CIA were planning something. There is also speculation that the government infiltrated the NOI to ? X. I believe that this has validity.

So the Nation of Islam was so weak willed that they let the white man infiltrate their organization and convince them to act upon their jealous ways and ? Malcolm X? lol you don't say

Oh and the Nation of Islam hate white people but their leader and founder is a white man...look it up...New York lost

? the nation of islam is from the mid-west not nyc

Because most of those crips and blood ran down south when they were on the run and started that ? . But that's neither here nor there. Each region brought something to the table. All that ? is interlaced and you ? in here arguing about ? when clearly there is not one objective person in this ? . Talmbout cooning, all this ? is cooning. Talmbout moving bricks in the twenties, LMAO!!! ? I tell ya. Give me feelings I don't give a ? . N/H.

I feel like theres a inferiority complex going on here. People shittin on NYC because they city was never mentioned as one of the greats, as a mecca, as a powerhouse. NYC is a great city, Great MCs came from NY, trending fashions come from NY, ? in the south get they steez from NYC about 6 months latge, I mean i hate to say it but its true. NYC is a powerhouse in buisness, I mean NYC is one of the best cities in the world and some people on this site feel the need to TRY to make it look bad so it can stoop down to their level because they know NYC is better. This is coming from a niga who live in Canada and reps NC. But i lived in NYC for 7 years n im riding with NYC. I dont care how many no signs, feelings, or whacks I get. Theres no place like NY and its had the largest impact on urban culture.

    Jay-z
    Nas
    Biggie
    Big Pun
    LL Cool J
    Wu-tang
    Mobb deep
    Gangstarr
    AZ
    Onyx
    Rakim
    Run DMC
    50 cent
    CNN
    Big Pun
    Big L

I mean the list goes on for days. I respect other coast and their music and impact. I love the south, When im 30 and up I want to raise my kids and get married in the south. I love the west coast for the swag they had back in the day and the music they providing for us right now, I love the midwest. ? I love america. But i mean I cant just ? on NYC and ignore what its done for the urban culture. Lets be real here

    @ blackdemo

All the ppl u listed are either dead or have fallen off the radar and have no real impact on the Hip Hop culture as a whole. The South and West are running the game right now as far as cultural influence eg, fashion, southern influenced sound (boom bap been dead since the 90's) and other traits that are distinctly southern/western. I lived in South Africa till I was 18 and now I live in the UK and I can tell you that NY cats aint makin no impact anywhere apart from their hometown.

Hip Hop as the rest of the world knows it, is the West/South style hip hop. East Coast been fell off since the 90's and its mostly the old heads and the nostalgic ? that are still living in the 90's that ? with NYC cats.

Jay-Z and 50 are the only reason NY stayed on the map, otherwise NYC woulda fallen off long time ago.

    They didn't make it popular?
LMAO stop it, grills aint become a nation wide trend until the SOUTH started doing it, so yes they did make it popular.

But where did the south get it from? nyc so they still had to follow.

If you want to argue he fact that new yorkers were the first to rock golds in the hip hop world than u have an argument. But if your arguing the fact the NYC was the first to wear golds aesthetically in general than the above statement is invalid. People have been wearing gold teeth as a fashion statement in the south during a time that predates hip hop itself. Blacks in Miami have been wearing them since the 60's

    no ? duh.

Its not so much that NYC has no impact, its that NYC is too culturally distinct to truly be mimicked or understood.

NYC ? are a breed of their own. Not only are a good portion of them *NOT* even ? in sense of being historically African American (good portion of them are 1st-3rd generation immigrants) but they grew up in close living conditions with Jews, Italians, Irish, Polish, Koreans, Chinese, Ricans and Dominicans. No where else in the nation have Black people lived in that close of space with that many ethnicities. And this is not even mentioning the cultural effect Islam has on NYC ? and the East Coast period.

All West Coast and Midwest ? are former Southerners at some point in their family history. Thats why the cultures between the South, Midwest, and West aren't dramatically different from each other and you see how ? like BG and Boosie get play all the way from Detroit to LA.

This is why there is such huge difference in the cultures of NYC ? and the rest of the nation........
