He needs it to get his confidence back and knock off the rust, better he did it during the summer than doing it when the games matter

Rose needs to be playing as much ball as he can to get right and back into shape last time we seen em he was avg 15.9 pts on 35% shooting with 4ast. This will help him get back in rhythm

    http://www.suntimes.com/28980523-579/derrick-rose-discusses-growing-tension-with-bulls-reinsdorf-reacts.html

LAS VEGAS — This relationship wasn’t going to end well.

Not for the Bulls, not for Derrick Rose.

    It still might not.

But for the first time in his career, Rose, who has three years left on his contract, seems ready to step up and mend a rocky partnership.

“I know it’s been there,’’ Rose told the Sun-Times, acknowledging there has been growing tension between the organization and his camp. “I heard there were some upset people.

“I’m happy I didn’t personally see it. I don’t want to see that. I kind of wonder where it was coming from because it seemed like whenever I was around, everything was all right. It bothered me because when I wasn’t around, I would hear from certain people that everything wasn’t all right.’’

That’s because things often weren’t all right.

Multiple sources in the organization say tension was mounting because Rose allowed his camp to take shots at the franchise. Gradually, there seemed to be less communication between the Bulls and their biggest star. And tensions hit a peak when Rose, who has a five-year, $94.8 million contract, seemed to want no part in the recruitment of players.

The Bulls’ pursuit of free agent Carmelo Anthony was the latest example.

Looking back, it’s clear Rose wasn’t all that interested in teaming with Anthony, who chose to return to the New York Knicks. Rose was much more aggressive in the Bulls’ pursuit of free agent Pau Gasol, not only asking for his phone number, but giving a hard sell to the big man on joining the Bulls.

So why Gasol and not Anthony?

“[Gasol is] someone that I knew I could play with,’’ Rose said. “You think about Pau, him now being in the East, what he’ll be able to achieve with the way we play, the way we dump the ball in the post a lot. It could be great.’’

As far as tensions with his own organization, Rose didn’t single out one side or the other. At 25 and two knee surgeries reminding him he’s mortal, it’s time to stop pointing fingers.

“This is a new beginning,’’ Rose said several times. “It really is.’’

Despite Rose confirming to the Sun-Times that there has been growing tension, Bulls chairman Jerry Reinsdorf issued a strongly worded statement Thursday night disputing the idea of any problems.

“I am confounded by the irresponsible report in the Chicago Sun-Times suggesting there is anything approaching discord or confusion between the Bulls executive office, coaching staff, and Derrick Rose or any other Bulls player,” Reinsdorf said in the statement. “To the contrary, I can remember no time when the organization has been any more focused, optimistic, and cohesive.”

    FINAL STRAW

On July 1, the Bulls opened the city for their recruitment of Anthony. The sales pitch would culminate with a dinner that night. Rose was requested to attend.

It was a perfect plan. Except for the confusion that ensued.

The entire day seemed like an exercise in defiance. Despite an ESPN report that indicated Rose had no knowledge that Anthony was even coming that day, Rose said he knew and had his workout moved from the Berto Center in Deerfield to the United Center.

The team wanted his workout to be a “big production’’ for Anthony, even having the court put down so he could see Rose’s knees were alive and well.

Rose would put on the show, but he wasn’t exactly a willing participant.

“[Rose] wanted nothing to do with it,’’ a source said last week. “They had to beg him just to talk to Anthony after [the workout].’’

Then there was the dinner for Anthony. Expected to attend: key members of the Bulls’ front office, plus Joakim Noah and Taj Gibson. The expectation was Rose also would attend. He supposedly informed them that he wouldn’t, but that evidently was lost in the communication ladder.

“They were irate he wasn’t there,’’ a team source said.

Three days later, ESPN reported that Rose was an innocent bystander during the entire Anthony visit.

“We knew where that story came from,’’ a Bulls source said.

The assumption was that Rose’s camp knew how angry the organization was over his lack of involvement during the Anthony visit, so it went on the offensive before the Bulls could.

This wasn’t the first time the Bulls have had internal questions about the Rose camp and its agenda.

    THE ‘CAMP’

Rose has always lived by the motto “Everybody Eats.’’

As one former teammate pointed out recently, ‘‘Everybody’s eating, but there’s only one guy out there busting his [butt].’’

The two most obvious faces in the Rose camp are his brother/manager, Reggie, and his agent, B.J. Armstrong.

Reggie obviously did little to help his brother’s cause on Feb. 21, 2013, by blasting the organization on the night of the trade deadline for its lack of movement. Never mind that Derrick Rose was still nursing a torn anterior cruciate ligament, despite team doctors clearing him to return.

It wasn’t the last time the organization would have problems with Reggie expressing his opinion.

    Then there’s Armstrong.

The former Bulls guard worked for the organization under former general manager Jerry Krause. But when vice president of basketball operations John Paxson came in, Armstrong was demoted from assistant GM to a scouting position.

Armstrong was completely out by 2005, reportedly unhappy with Paxson and the Bulls. The fact that Armstrong, who works for the Wasserman Media Group in Los Angeles, became Rose’s agent was an obvious concern for the Bulls.

Armstrong doesn’t do interviews about Rose. Just ask him.

“I don’t do interviews, and what does that word ‘camp’ even mean?’’ Armstrong said when asked about the Rose camp and its relationship with the Bulls.

Asked if there was one spokesman for Rose, Armstrong said: “No one does interviews. No one talks. Derrick speaks to you [media] guys, and that’s it. There’s nothing to discuss. If there is something going on, there’s two people: You can get it from [chairman] Jerry Reinsdorf or you can get it from Derrick Rose. There’s nothing else to talk about.’’

Armstrong was informed of growing concerns by members of the organization concerning Rose and the advice he might be receiving from those around him.

“You’re talking about rumors,” Armstrong said. “I see Jerry 50 times a year. If I ask Jerry Reinsdorf right now how the relationship is, that’s all I care about.’’

    ‘ICON’ STATUS

Call it maturity, call it watching what LeBron James has done for his hometown team this summer, but Rose now seems poised to take control of his own brand.

During this week of USA Basketball tryouts in Las Vegas, all Rose has spoken about is being a leader — not only for Team USA, which plays its first real intrasquad game Friday, but for the Bulls.

He was admittedly in “a dark place’’ rehabbing from his first knee surgery entering last season, and that’s all behind him. Rose keeps reiterating that he “wants to be an icon.’’

Icons don’t allow the group to lead. Icons lead the group — on and off the court. Rose is finally embracing that concept.

“It seems like everybody has one goal, from the front office all the way down now,’’ Rose said. “It seems like everyone is finally communicating with each other. That’s all we need. You think about all the championship teams, they say that communication and one goal is usually the recipe. You take away all the other [stuff] and just make it simple.

“This is a new beginning for everybody. We’ve got a new practice facility, a new year where I’m coming back, and we have some great talent. It’s time to turn the page and move in a positive direction.

it could have been worse for d rose the bulls could have asked him to read out loud hes played 10 games in the last 860 something days and has earned 6.8 million per win and 3.4 million per game over the last two years

its the least he could do so he better not hold that ? in his heart

he has to have the worst group of advisors ever assembled

    the great passing big men
    a healthy d rose
    good shooting on the perimeter
    jimmy playing for a contract
    thibs with depth

adding 'skilled' to an already 'scrappy and tough team' got me really thinking some ?

it would be some ? if d rose has no further injury problems and just simply sucks from now on

    some rick ankiel/chuck knoblauch ?

its cool though my biggest worry was rose not being able to handle all these games being played so close to each other which is why i wanted him to play for team usa because if playing a month of ball with them is too much for his knees than the bulls were ? regardless

im hyped he got through those 3 games in 3 days without any soreness i dont give a ? if he out there windmilling layups resulting in the basketball beating the ? out of the backboard -- yet

Bruh Derrick Rose not finna suck. I know what you doing--embracing the worst case scenario--cuz that's what I do usually but his leg would have to be amputated before he SUCKED.

I'm thinking grant hill status is the worst case scenario for a healthy Rose. Of course, falling off how grant hill did would require us to find another superstar, but for all we know we would end up needing that anyway. Gasol & Noah ain't getting any younger brehs.

I'm not trying to be pessimistic here but I honestly believe that unless Rose comes back AT LEAST 95% by playoffs, we ain't winning ? no way. And even then it's a stretch.

    What's our cap looking like for 2015 & 2016?

As of right now, it's looking like

    PG Rose/Brooks/Hinrich
    SG Butler/Snell
    SF Dunleavy/McBuckets
    PF Gasol/Gibson/Mirotic
    C Noah/Bairstow

    Fixed.

i wasnt being all that serious with it obviously any evaluation of how good this bulls team will be is dependent on rose remaining healthy more so than how effective he will be off injury

    i will say this though

he still cant shoot all this time he had to refine his jumpshot and his form looks worse than it ever has i cant really call it but it kinda reminds me of tebow trying to throw a football it just looks weird where he leans in to it every time he shoots

i hope you wrong about what you thinking because this year is the best chance at a ship for chicago as they ever had it will only get harder from here on out

if there ever was a year to catch the cavs slipping its this year

as for the future the cap should look better in 16 than it will next year but it wont really matter because bulls only get to eat when others are done eating anyway so we gotta hope one of these players coming out of chicago come back home or hope mirotic or doug pan out

the one thing that you could say is in ? favor is that he is always in the lineup you cant say that about pau recently but thats it

i will take VERY QUESTIONABLE d over invisible any day -- ? blocked less shots than kirk last season gasol was around 1.5 he is a legit 7 footer which will allow him to put up some resistance and operate in the post better no matter how much he gets pushed around -- pau ability to face up + bball iq along with passing from the high/low post will stress any opposing big as he showed when spain took on brazil

nene (who dogged the bulls out in the playoffs) and varejao (who cavs are counting on) couldnt hold pau for ?

this what got me hyped up the most

last year the way thibs used jo allowed his decision making to open up the cutting game by pulling out the opposing big to open up the rim which made it so that there wasnt no one player you had to key in on but the ? up part about having jo doing that was losing his offensive rebounding

with pau in the mix now not only can thibs leave jo banging down low but pau can play the high post better than jo ever did because he can hit an open j while having the same playmaking ability

games between cle remains the only team in the east im really looking at nobody but them

and speaking of cle varejao should be the one they worried about health wise not k love or kyrie he has played an average of 36 games the past 4 seasons

if he go down its all on haywood who he himself is an injury risk

no way k love can play the 5 even if its a hybrid scheme like bosh did hes just not athletic enough for that scheme and thats even if he had the willingness or attentiveness to do so (which he dont)

now if he does remain healthy i still dont see cle being elite defensively but you dont have to be the bulls been that and got ? to show for it

their offense will improve their defense greatly ala spurs and thats gonna suck

10 Bulls Story lines going into training camp.

CHICAGO -- The anticipation is high and the expectations are higher. As the Chicago Bulls head into media day on Monday afternoon, they'll be doing so with the same championship aspirations they had to begin last season. Only this time, they'll be doing so with a deep, talented group that expects to have a healthy Derrick Rose leading the way.

With that in mind, let's take a look at 10 of the top storylines facing the Bulls this season:

    Can Rose stay healthy?

It's the question that won't go away for the Bulls. Nobody knows the answer. The former MVP didn't play very well as a member of Team USA at the World Cup earlier this month, but he played, and that's a good sign for the Bulls. He still has a lot of rust to shake off and fans shouldn't rush to judge his game early in the year, but if the Bulls want to compete for a title, everyone in the United Center knows Rose must be able to stay on the floor. It's going to be very interesting to see how coach Tom Thibodeau uses Rose early in the season. The guess here is that Thibodeau will be extra cautious with his star. Despite Thibodeau's track record of piling up the minutes, I'd be very surprised if Rose consistently played close to 40 minutes a night early in the season.

Can Noah have another All-Star season?
Joakim Noah has proved himself to be one of the best centers in the game and an integral part of everything the Bulls do. He had offseason knee surgery and said earlier in the summer that he'd be fine once training camp rolled around. With Rose on the floor he won't have as much pressure to create offensively, but he is a much better player than he was the last time Rose played anywhere close to a full season. Noah should be able to continue building on the great play he's put together the past two seasons.

What kind of impact will McDermott have?

A large one. I've been asked a lot this summer about Doug McDermott and whether he will have a bigger impact this season than fellow rookie Nikola Mirotic. I think he will, and I think McDermott will become the first rookie to have a major role in Thibodeau's rotation. Omer Asik played some solid minutes in his rookie season, but he didn't get consistent minutes early on. McDermott has a chance to be a difference-maker from the start. The Bulls' staff loves the way he can shoot and space the floor for Rose & Co. If the rookie from Creighton proves he can pick up Thibodeau's defensive schemes quickly, he will see minutes early.

Early in the season, likely not. The Bulls' front office loves Mirotic's ability and believes he can grow into a very good player over time, but the 23-year-old must prove to Thibodeau that he can play defense and adjust to NBA competition. Mirotic could be a big factor off the bench for Thibodeau later in the season, but with Pau Gasol and Taj Gibson at the 4, there aren't a lot of minutes to go around.

How much does Gasol have left in the tank?

Gasol averaged 17.4 points and 9.7 rebounds last season and gives the Bulls the type of back-to-the-basket scorer they've been yearning for, but he is 34 years old. The former All-Star can still produce at a high level, but can he stay healthy throughout the season? Much like Rose, it's going to be intriguing to see how Thibodeau doles out Gasol's minutes to keep him fresh.

How will Thibs use Noah, Gasol, Gibson?

The educated guess here is that Gasol will be used in a similar role to that of the departed Carlos ? , playing 25-30 minutes a night. But it will be Noah and Gibson whom Thibodeau uses to close out games because of their defensive prowess.

    Can Butler improve his shot?
Jimmy Butler shot just 39.7 percent from the field last season and struggled to find his shooting stroke throughout various points of the season. Going into his fourth season, Butler will be seeking a big contract extension this summer, but to get that he must prove he can find his offense. Butler is one of the best perimeter defenders in the NBA and is well-liked in the locker room, but to take the next step in his progression he must start knocking down more jumpers. The good news for him is that playing alongside Rose -- really for the first time for a long stretch -- should free up more space for him on the floor.

    Can Snell take another step?

Maybe. The Bulls' coaching staff loved what Tony Snell did during the Vegas summer league, but now the second-year swingman has to prove he can play well when the games count. He showed flashes last season but didn't always look confident on the floor. After Snell added more muscle in the offseason, the Bulls hope he can take a step the same way Butler did in his second season.

    Is there enough offense?

Always the million-dollar question behind that of Rose's health. The reality for Thibodeau is that there should be enough as long as his roster stays relatively healthy -- at least enough to get to an expected showdown with LeBron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers in the Eastern Conference finals. Rose's presence on the floor and his ability to create make his teammates better. McDermott and Mike Dunleavy should be able to knock down open looks, while Gasol and Noah can clean up the glass. But the issue for the Bulls is the same as it ever was: Who besides Rose will be able to create offense in the postseason? Thibodeau will have to cross that bridge when he gets there.

Will Thibs actually use his bench?

On paper, the Bulls are 11 players deep, 12 if you count veteran center Nazr Mohammed, who was re-signed last week. Bulls general manager Gar Forman and executive vice president John Paxson did a nice job filling up the roster for Thibodeau after failing to land Carmelo Anthony in free agency. But now it's up to Thibodeau to use the new players throughout the season and pace his team so that it will be ready for the postseason. This team is much deeper than it was a year ago, and there is a sense of urgency within the organization that this is the year for the Bulls to win their first title of the post-Jordan era.
