It took several months, but Lil Wayne has finally apologized to the family of Emmett Till for his offensive lyrics in Future's song, "Karate Chop."
"Pop a lot of pain pills/Bout to put rims on my skateboard wheels/Beat that p*ssy up like Emmett Till," Wayne rapped in the song, which leaked onto the internet back in February.
As we previously reported, Till's family was very upset by the lyrics. The 14-year old boy was brutally murdered in Mississippi after whistling at a white woman in 1955.
After waiting months for an apology from Wayne that never came, Till's family decided they would would attempt to get Mountain Dew to drop the Young Money CEO.
"Don't do the Dew. Stop buying it. Stop lining his pockets," Airickca Gordon-Taylor, Director of the Mamie Till Mobley Memorial Foundation, said in a recent video.
Today Wayne finally issued an apology. Read it below:
Dear Till Family:
As a recording artist, I have always been interested in word play. My lyrics often reference people, places and events in my music, as well as the music that I create for or alongside other artists.
It has come to my attention that lyrics from my contribution to a fellow artist’s song has deeply offended your family. As a father myself, I cannot imagine the pain that your family has had to endure. I would like to take a moment to acknowledge your hurt, as well as the letter you sent to me via your attorneys.
Moving forward, I will not use or reference Emmett Till or the Till family in my music, especially in an inappropriate manner. I fully support Epic Record’s decision to take down the unauthorized version of the song and to not include the reference in the version that went to retail. I will not be performing the lyrics that contain that reference live and have removed them from my catalogue.
I have tremendous respect for those who paved the way for the liberty and opportunities that African-Americans currently enjoy. As a business owner who employs several African-American employees and gives philanthropically to organizations that help youth to pursue their dreams my ultimate intention is to uplift rather than degrade our community.
Best,
Dwayne Michael Carter, Jr.
Lil Wayne
After the family of the late historical civil rights figure Emmett Till made an attempt to get Lil Wayne dropped from Mountain Dew due to his offensive lyrics about their deceased family member in Future's song "Karate Chop," the rapper finally felt the need to issue a letter of apology.
However, the Till family and Airicka Gordon-Taylor, the executive director of Till Mobley Memorial Foundation, aren't buying it.
They claim that there was no legit "sorry" within the letter.
This is what a representative of the story had to say:
"While it’s commendable that he has vowed to respect the legacy of Emmett Till and his memory to ‘not use or reference Emmett Till or the Till family in his music,' this statement falls short of an apology, as none is mentioned."

I WONDER WHO WROTE THAT APOLOGY FOR HIM, GUDDA GUDDA?
-
Good apology if it was couple days after the controversy. But at least this ? over with. Still smh it took so long
-
i lol'd.
some of these ppl are so far removed from reality, wayne being 1 of em.
-
So they gotta threaten yo pockets before they can get a simple apology? This ? like a kid. The ones wen u tell em to do something u gotta say it multiple times and they still dont do it but soon as u pull yo belt off, THEN they smile and do what u asked. That's why they sometimes they get spanked anyway for taking too long. As sincere and sensitive as he may be, months later for an apology just look a tat insincere and insensitive.

Actually it was 2 months -
It has come to my attention aka they trying to take my money away, let me finally say something.
Wayne saying that reminds me of the part in the Rick James skit where Rick didn't know what the hell was going on til Charlie smacked him back. -
It reads like a lawyer wrote it and made him sign off on it.

"my ultimate intention is to uplift rather than degrade our community."
LMAO @ this -
Now, if we can only get J. Cole to remove that "you can't outfart me" line from his catalog...
-
I wonder who wrote that
I find it hard to believe Wayne knows the word "acknowledge" means -
Mountain dew's announcement of dropping lil Wayne in a couple of more days.

I hate "Public Apologies"...and is it me or has his music cooled off lately. When I do listen to radio he's not up there a fraction as much as I was used to, and outside of this and other ? press I don't hear much about him.
Even when people started complaining about his records he was on every station, every blog, everywhere.
Now not so much...think his run has wound/is winding down. -
Good appology...of course you niggss will find away to hate it...
But yea...? upset with another rapper lyrics, lets take his endorsements away... -

That's a good thing. Wayne had been oversaturating the game for at least 4-5 years now.
He needs to take a break -
It takes a while and he gives a generic apology. How hard is it to man up and say sorry from the heart?
-
well losing a contract with Mountain Dew
Will make you apologize
