Seen it yesterday, I enjoyed it. Still prefer Curry's voice and antics, but overall I had fun watching and the scares and attempts at getting closer to the book were great.

it was quite a bit different from what i expected but in a good way — i didnt expect to laugh nearly that much and it was very touching at times as well — i wouldnt say it was the scariest thing ive ever seen but thats maybe asking for a lot when i already know whats going to happen (more or less) -- i had a lot of fun watching though and it seemed like everybody else in the theatre did too

the best line for me by far was ritchie saying
You PUNCHED me in the face, made me walk through ? WATER, dragged me through a CRACKHOUSE… AND NOW IM GONNA HAVE TO ? THIS ? CLOWN

    the whole theatre cheered

another thing that worked really well with the rest of the audience at my local theatre was waiting until the closing credits to disclose the movies full title

in the ad, on the poster and marquee and in the opening credits the title is just "IT”

most of my audience seemed surprised by the "Part I" tag

i guess that says a lot about the films success in drawing an audience beyond the stephen king diehards

(i had heard they were having a tough time identifying the social media awareness of the movie on account of "IT" being the most generic film title possible)

A couple references made to Silver Bullet (the bike), Tommyknockers, Dark Tower, Graveyard Shift, Killer Clowns from Outer Space, the original It costume, and there were a few others.

    @sion explain please

They had me by the ? with the first 2 acts. Even with the changes (like switching Ben and Mike's roles among other things) it was working and true to the spirit of the book.

Then the third act happened. That's where you can tell it went through 2 directors. It was a mess that damn near felt like a different movie and the deviations from the book were for the worse there (ie: Henry Bowers death, final confrontation). Took it from a 4 star movie to a 3 star with the quickness. Just Hollywood as ? . They even showed the deadlights smh.

However the tone was good, the kids were excellent and I loved the emphasis on It being the great evil that infects and rots derry and it's residents.

Overall I'd recommend to fans of the novel and mini series but lower your expectations.

I felt the same about the third act. Just didn't feel the same haha. Didn't ruin the movie for me though. I gotta re read the book now, haven't read it since highschool.

its going to be tedious if this whole thread is just comparing the film to the book and not looking at the films strengths and weaknesses in their own right

but i agree with all of your sentiments @Broddie

as an adaptation id give it like a B-

    as a film an A-

there were things i didnt like but most of it comes from me comparing the movie to the book

lots of changes that i couldnt help but notice
so i guess bill using the little sheep ? gun on pennywise with no ammo was their attempt to setup the idea that belief in a weakness is more important against pennywise than literal physical weakness

i wonder how many non readers were deeply confused by that

    http://nerdist.com/it-sequel-pennywise-origin-stephen-king/

    according to this article

the second film will be focusing on both pennywises origin and the losers club as adults

apparently some people think the adult portion of the story is less compelling than the childrens which is why theyre considering exploring pennywises origin deeper in the sequel

i just hope they follow the existing lore if they do this
Before the events of the novel IT, IT (the creature) has already awoken several times to create destruction, cause panic, and feed. IT often would possess others to murder the people dwelling in Derry.

When the novel begins IT awakens and finds its first new victim: George Denbrough. In retaliation George's brother Bill and his six friends in The Loser's Club go to its lair to ? it, but just end up badly wounding it and forcing its retreat into hibernation.

Twenty-seven years later, IT returns determined to ? the seven Losers. Upon knowing IT is back Stan kills himself, leaving six members in The Loser's Club. Norb, However, determined to finish the creature once and for all, five of The Losers (Mike is injured) travel into its lair again. Bill Denbrough and IT engage in "The Ritual of Chud" during which IT is assumed defeated once and for all.

As stated above, IT is deceased but in Stephen King's novel Dreamcatcher, Jonesy arrives at the Derry stand-pipe and spray painted there is "Pennywise Lives!" over the tribute to The Loser's Club. IT is also seen in the Stephen King's novel The Tommyknockers, He is viewed as a supposed hallucination when one of the "becoming" goes to Derry to stock up on supplies.

IT, in its ultimate form, emits "Deadlights" similar to the ones that the Crimson King possesses.

Dandelo is the same type of creature as IT and when killed, turns into a massive insect.

It was a child of The Crimson King (Dark Tower's big bad) who dwelled in the macroverse along with the turtle and the creatures from The Mist.

Maybe a year. Director wants to include flashbacks and doesn't want the kids to look too aged by part 2.
